Rain sent Olympic tennis indoors for the first time in 100 years Sunday
WIMBLEDON, England - Rain sent Olympic tennis indoors for the first time in 100 years Sunday, when Julia Goerges of Germany notched a first-round upset win over No. J.D. Walton Jersey . 2-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland under Wimbledons retractable roof. Goerges beat this years Wimbledon runner-up 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4. Showers delayed the start of play and prompted tournament officials to close the Centre Court roof for the match, which began only five minutes late. Play on 11 uncovered courts began after a delay of nearly three hours. The indoor match was the first in the Olympics since the 1912 Games in Stockholm, played in a pavilion on wood courts painted black.   Clay Matthews mens Jersey . -- The Oakland Athletics have had a different star for just about every monumental win theyve had this season. Mason Crosby mens Jersey . With Cousins not in the arena due for disciplinary reasons, the Kings were an effective, unselfish team. Now the question is whether they can keep it up. Marcus Thornton scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half to help the slumping Kings snap Portlands five-game winning streak with a 108-96 victory over the Trail Blazers on Sunday night. Cousins, who is the starting centre, was suspended indefinitely Saturday for unprofessional behaviour and conduct detrimental to the team. The third-year player and Kings head coach Keith Smart had a confrontation during halftime of Fridays 97-85 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. Smart told Cousins to stay in the locker room and not join the team for the second half. Sacramento had six players in double figures and recorded a season-high 31 assists against Portland. The Kings pulled away in the second half, shooting nearly 71 per cent after the break. Using its eighth different starting lineup this season, Sacramento had a season-best 45 field goals. "We were missing DeMarcus, so we had a different lineup out there and it worked out tonight," said James Johnson, who made a rare start at power forward while Jason Thompson moved to centre. "We were a small team tonight so we ran fast and played very unselfish." Both Thornton and Salmons helped spark the second-half surge after both were relative non-factors in the opening half. The pair combined for 31 second-half points, helping the Kings pull away. Thornton made 8 of 11 shots in the second half and finished with four rebounds and four assists. Salmons had 13 of his 15 points in the second half and also added seven rebounds and seven assists. "John is a very unselfish player and can get his own shots," Thornton said. "He got going in the second half. Me and the first half didnt do so well. But I came on at the right time and got hot in the second half." Already ahead by nine points, the Kings opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run, including a 3-pointer by Thornton, to build their lead to 87-71. The Blazers trailed by at least 12 the rest of the way. "I just think it was one of those games where the other team played better than us," Portland rookie guard Damian Lillard said. "There probably were some defensive mistakes we made that we shouldnt have and they took advantagge of it.dddddddddddd" Former Blazer Travis Outlaw had a season-high 15 points and Isaiah Thomas added 11 for the Kings, who had lost six of their previous seven games. Both Thompson and Johnson chipped in 10 points. "Its definitely fun playing against some former teammates," Outlaw said. "I wish I could go out and do it against other teams that well. Everybody got great looks at the rim tonight. We played very unselfish." LaMarcus Aldridge had 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Blazers, who have lost two of three meetings with the Kings this season. Lillard had 15 points and seven assists, Nicolas Batum scored 17, and JJ Hickson had 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Kings havent said when Cousins will be allowed to rejoin the team again. He was told not to attend the game. Cousins is averaging team bests of 16.6 points and 9.5 rebounds. "There are a few things we need to sit down and talk about," Smart said. "We have a couple of days before our next game and our executive staff will discuss things and go from there." Sacramento also played without starting guard Tyreke Evans, who missed his fourth straight game with a sore left knee. Evans, the Kings second-leading scorer, has missed 8 of the past 12 games. "I thought they played very well without their key players," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "In this league when players are missing for whatever reasons the other players take that as an opportunity to play well." The scoring of Thornton kept the Kings on top in the third quarter. The streak-shooting Thornton had 11 points and Brooks hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, helping Sacramento carry an 80-71 lead into the fourth. Outlaw keyed a second-quarter effort by Sacramentos reserves. He had 13 points and Thomas had eight points and five assists, helping the Kings outscore Portland 28-15 and take a 49-42 lead into halftime. Trailing by 10 early in the second quarter, the Kings responded with a 15-0 run to take a 36-31 lead. Notes: Portland made just 7 of 24 from 3-point range. ... Blazers starting guard Wesley Matthews has a left hip injury and didnt travel with the team. Seldom-used Victor Claver started in the Blazers backcourt. ... Outlaws 13 points in the second quarter was two more than his season high entering the game. He scored 11 points against the Blazers in a Kings victory in Portland on Dec. 8. ... The two teams dont play again until Dec. 26 in Portland.

The alleged assault occurred in a San Francisco hotel room early Sunday
SAN FRANCISCO -- Police are investigating a sexual assault allegation involving 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree, authorities said Friday. Mike Adams Jersey . The alleged assault occurred in a San Francisco hotel room early Sunday, after the 49ers playoff victory over the Green Bay Packers, police said in a written statement. Crabtree has been interviewed with his attorney present and has co-operated with the probe, the statement said. The receiver hasnt been detained or arrested, and he agreed to be available for more questions in the future. The probe is being handled by the departments special victims unit. When the investigation is done, the findings will be forwarded to the district attorneys office, which decides if charges should be filed. Authorities didnt release any further details. 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said the team is aware of the allegations. "The 49ers take such matters very seriously," he said in a statement. "We will have no further comment at this time as the legal process is ongoing." San Francisco is preparing to play the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC championship game on Sunday. The winner goes to the Super Bowl. The 49ers said Crabtree made the trip to Atlanta. The team referred all other questions about the matter to Crabtrees attorney, who was not immediately identified. This season, Crabtree became the first San Francisco wide receiver to log more than 1,000 yards in a season since Terrell Owens in 2003. He had a career-best 1,105 yards receiving, including a single-game high 172 yards on eight receptions in a win over Arizona. In Saturdays NFC division matchup against the Packers, Crabtree caught two touchdown passes and wound up with nine receptions and 119 yards for the Niners (12-4-1). Joel Dreessen Jersey . The Jaguars said Mularkey was released Monday afternoon after a brief stay that included tests. Mularkey showed up at the facility a day after his teams 17-10 loss to the New York Jets and started feeling ill. He went to a team trainer, who took him to a nearby hospital. The team offered few other details about his illness. But the Jaguars (2-11) said Mularkey is expected back at work Tuesday. "He seemed to be doing pretty good," said defensive co-ordinator Mel Tucker, who informed players about Mularkeys absence at a team meeting Monday afternoon. "I look forward to having him back in here." Jacksonville, which has lost nine of its last 10, plays at Miami (5-8) on Sunday. The Jaguars will be looking to avoid a third consecutive meltdown in the second half. The Jags led the New York Jets 3-0 on Sunday before 17 unanswered points. The same thing happened the previous week at Buffalo, where the Bills scored 17 straight in the second half to turn a close game into a rout. "Players are frustrated, guys are frustrated with the way the season has gone," guard Uche Nwaneri said. "Weve had numerous opportunities to close teams out. If you look at our season game by game, theres five or six games in there easily that if we would have been able to execute just a little bit better those are wins instead of losses." The biggest problem the last two weeks has been Jacksonvilles run defence. The Jets ran for 116 yards in the second half, including a seven-play, touchdown drive that included seven consecutive runs by Bilal Powell. The Bills ran for 158 yards in the second half the previous week, gouging the Jaguars inside and out. "Its absolutely not a matter of effort," Tucker said. "These guys are playing extremely hard. Guys are physical, guys are giving it everything they have. As you can see, we were able to get the ball back there in the fourth quarter a couuple times stopping the run and getting off the field and giving us a chance there at the end.dddddddddddd Theres no lack of effort with these guys, and if there was, Id be the first one to tell you." The Jaguars moved the ball into Jets territory in the final minute -- they completed a 28-yard pass on a fourth-and-15 play -- but Chad Hennes second interception ended any chance for a comeback. Players felt like they let one slip away, especially since nothing went their way early. Henne had a pass tipped and intercepted near the goal line. Rookie receiver Kevin Elliott, starting in place of Cecil Shorts III, dropped two balls and was flagged for illegal touching on a key play late. Guard Eben Britton, playing in place of Mike Brewster, was manhandled inside, giving up three sacks. Josh Scobee missed a 55-yard field goal attempt to close out the first half. And the Jaguars just missed blocking two punts. Especially gut-wrenching for Jacksonville was Dwight Lowerys touchdown return that was overturned in the second quarter. "When you have all your cards in the deck, you assume you will be able to put a game away or close out a ball game," said cornerback Rashean Mathis, pointing out a number of key injuries. "When you dont have all your cards in a deck, you have to have a perfect hand." Despite another loss, the Jaguars believe they will be able to close out the season on a high note. "Even though its late in the season, horrible record, we are trying to build something special and carry some positive momentum into the off-season," linebacker Paul Posluszny said. "We are at the most difficult point of the year: losing, bad record, no playoffs. But we still have to do things right because eventually, someday soon, this organization will be a playoff team and weve got to start putting those building blocks together sooner rather than later. "We dont want to put anything out there that doesnt represent our best."

Its not a trend the Boston Celtics want to continue much longer
BOSTON -- Lose another key player, win once again. Vance McDonald Jersey . Its not a trend the Boston Celtics want to continue much longer. The Celtics responded to yet another blow to their lineup with a 97-84 victory Friday night over the reeling Orlando Magic, getting double-doubles from Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett in winning their third straight. Boston lost All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo at the beginning of the week to a torn knee ligament and learned Friday that promising rookie Jared Sullinger is also out for the season following back surgery. "With the injuries, a number of guys are stepping up and thats what we are going to need," said Pierce, who had 14 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists despite sitting out the fourth quarter. Garnett finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Jeff Green scored 17 and Courtney Lee had 14 points and five assists for the Celtics. "The production is coming from everybody," said Lee, who inherited Rondos job at point guard. "Rondo, hes our playmaker. Hes racked up a lot of assists with his playmaking ability. And now we just have to move the ball and make sure we are in the right spots to execute the offence." The Celtics had assists on 30 of their 42 field goals while shooting exactly 50 per cent. Jason Terry and Leandro Barbosa scored 12 each for the Celtics, who had six players in double figures. "We have to be a team by committee," coach Doc Rivers said. "Im asking guys to play different spots. It does create confusion on the other end." It helped that the Celtics were facing Orlando, which last won on Jan. 16 and has been dealing with injury problems that rival those of the Celtics. The Magic were without their top two scorers in Aaron Afflalo (calf) and Glen Davis (broken left foot), then lost point guard Jameer Nelson to a bruised left forearm. "Its part of basketball and well continue to deal with it," coach Jacque Vaughn said. "It means other guys have to fill in and fill roles and well keep at it." Nelson, who averages 7.4 assists and is third on the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game, did not play in the second half. "I took an elbow to the forearm, so well see how I feel tomorrow," he said. J.J. Redick had 15 points and five assists and Nikola Vucevic had 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Magic, who finished with 95 shots. Only 36 of them went in and hardly any midway through the second half. "We got some good looks. The ball just didnt go in," Vaughn said. The depleted Magic still managed to push the Celtics through much of the game, taking advantage of 15 turnovers and some shaky free throw shooting as Boston went 9 for 14 from the foul line. Orlando had been chipping away at the lead in the third quarter, pulling to 57-54 on ETwaun Moores three-point play with 5:04 left in the period. Boston slowly rebuilt the lead with a few short runs, then broke open the game in the fourth when the weary Magic wilted defensively. "They made shots, went on a little run and we couldnt answer back," Vaughn said. Pierce scored the last four points of the third quarter, putting the Celtics up 72-59 and starting a 10-0 run for Boston. The Celtics opened the fourth quarter 7 for 9, including a series of dunks by Lee and Green during an 8-2 spurt that extended the lead to 86-63. Andrew Nicholson had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Moore also scored 14 for the Magic. NOTES: Boston has won seven straight regular-season games against the Magic. ... Boston had 30 assists. ... LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- From Notre Dames unbeaten regular season to college footballs biggest awards, Manti Teo just keeps winning. Now the linebacker needs two more victories to cap an unforgettable senior season. Teo was honoured three times at the 22nd Home Depot College Football Awards show Thursday night at Disney World, including the Maxwell Award for the nations most outstanding player. Teo has now won six major awards since the end of Notre Dames regular season, also taking home the Bednarik Award for top defensive player and Walter Camp Foundation player of the year award on Thursday. He became the first defensive player to win the Maxwell Award since 1980, ending a string of nine straight quarterbacks. Next up is the Heisman Trophy ceremony on Saturday night, with Teo and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel considered the favourites. Then Teo will try to help the Fighting Irish dethrone defending champion Alabama in the BCS national championship game. "Im at a loss for words," he said of winning the Maxwell. "The last time I ever dreamt of winning that award was on a video game. So to win it is a mind-blowing experience." Wearing a black beaded lei representing his native Hawaii, Teo said coming back to play football following the deaths of his grandmother and girlfriend just four days apart this season makes everything hes achieved since then more worthwhile. "I never thought that me coming back for my senior year would be the best situation for me with the tragedy," Teo said. "Its a testament that the Lord answered my prayers and that I had 80-plus brothers there with me, sacrificing for me." Teo finished the regular season with 103 tackles and seven interceptions. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly, who was presented with the Coach of the Year award after leading the Irish to their first 12-0 regular season since 1988, said Teo is an example of the family culture hes tried to build in his three seasons in South Bend. "Everybody knows you dont do it with one guy," Kelly said. "Collectively, everybody just bought in. ... We still got one (game) left. We want to finish it off the right way." While Teo and Notre Dame certainly had a big night, so too did Texas A&M. Manziel won the Davey OBrien National Quarterback Award and junior offensive linneman Luke Joeckel took home the Outland Trophy for the nations best interior lineman.dddddddddddd Other players honoured Thursday were Southern Californias Marqise Lee (Biletnikoff Award for top receiver), Tulanes Cairo Santos (Lou Groza Award for top kicker), Louisiana Techs Ryan Allen (Ray Guy Award for top punter), Mississippi States Johnthan Banks (Jim Thorpe Award for top defensive back), and Wisconsins Montee Ball (Doak Walker Award for top running back). Manziel acknowledged he will be nervous Saturday knowing he has a chance to win college footballs most hallowed individual honour. Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein is the third finalist for the Heisman Trophy. Three sophomores have won the Heisman, including Tim Tebow in 2007, Sam Bradford in 2008 and Mark Ingram in 2009. The best a first-year player has ever done is second. "I had high expectations, but I never would have expected this for myself," said Manziel, a redshirt freshman. "Ill be with two of the best players in the country, all eyes are on you. Its the biggest award in college football. I think youre gonna have a few butterflies." Joeckel said that even he has been amazed at watching "Johnny Football" and his exploits this season. "Its hard to protect for someone when nobody knows where he is," Joeckel said of Manziel. "Hes a fun guy to block for." Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said that type of level-headed poise is what has defined his quarterback all season. "The way he plays, no moment has been too big for him," Sumlin said. In one of the non-competition awards presented Thursday, Texas long snapper Nate Boyer was also honoured with the Disney Spirit Award, given annually to the most inspirational figure or team. Boyer, a 32-year-old sophomore, earned a Bronze Star for his service with the U.S. Army Special Forces Unit and has also provided assistance to autistic children and Darfur refugees. Former Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian was also honoured with the Contribution to College Football Award for his works off the field. Kelly said the former coach is every bit as revered as he was in his prime leading the Irish. "He walks with a limp, but let me tell you, he could still coach today. And he can tell me things about my football team." Kelly said.

The NFL and its on-field officials union failed to reach an agreement
NEW YORK -- The NFL and its on-field officials union failed to reach an agreement when they met Saturday morning, making it more likely replacement officials will work the leagues first week of regular-season games. Joe Staley Jersey . Michael Arnold, lead negotiator for the NFL Referees Association, says the union remains "willing to negotiate with the NFL in order to reach a fair agreement." But Arnold says "no additional meetings are scheduled at this time." The league locked out the referees in early June, then hired replacements, whose work in exhibition games has been heavily criticized. In 2001, the NFL used replacements for the first week of the regular season before a contract was finalized. The speed of the game and the amount of time starters are on the field increase exponentially for real games, making the replacements task more challenging. Bryan Bulaga mens Jersey . The rims werent quite as kind early on during the Oklahoma City forwards return trip, but he got reacquainted with them late and also got help from fellow All-Star Russell Westbrook to help the Thunder pull out a 105-102 victory over the Orlando Magic Thursday night. Durant scored 38 points, including 18 in the fourth quarter, and Westbrook added 29 points and 10 assists as Oklahoma City erased a 14-point deficit to battle back for the win. Durants effort was two points better than his All-Star night and also included five 3-pointers and a 9-for-9 night at the free-throw line -- all in a game-high 42 minutes of action. The Thunders win was their seventh straight, matching a streak from earlier in the season. "I was so down on myself. I was really going down after the first quarter," Durant said. "But my coaches and my teammates continued to encourage me and told me they believed in me. It just clicked for me and I started to make a few shots and free throws. "Once your teammates give you that confidence, no matter what you feel good, and I was able to make some shots." The Magic had a chance to send it to overtime in the final seconds, but Jason Richardsons long 3-pointer bounced off the backboard at the buzzer. It was a fitting culmination of a final 12 minutes for the Magic in which they went just 8 for 25 from the field. The Thunder, who struggled to find shots in the first half, finished 10 for 15 in the final period. Dwight Howard scored 33 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead all five Magic starters in double figures. But the Magic dropped to 0-2 against the Thunder this season, following their season-opening loss at Oklahoma City on Christmas night. Howard said there wasnt one singular deficiency from his perspective. "Its both ends," he said. "We have to be able to execute and get stops. Thats the one thing we didnt do well tonight in the fourth quarter. But its a good lesson for us." After struggling to keep up with the Thunder during the December loss, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said they would need to limit the Thunders opportunities around the rim as well as their free-throw attempts to compete in the rematch. The Magic did a decent job at both in the first half limiting the Oklahoma City, who entered the game leading the NBA with 960 free-throw attempts, to just seven attempts at the half. But the Thunder found their way to the stripe in the second half and finished at their season average of 27 attempts.dddddddddddd They also clamped down on the Magics outside shooting and forced Howard to carry the load, all of which kept Orlando out of rhythm. "We went small," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "I thought that gave us some energy, gave us some juice. I know we would have enough and we did. As the game went on, we got stronger defensively. We got stronger with our intensity." It resulted in 12 Magic turnovers that produced 12 points for Oklahoma City. Orlando took an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter before turnovers and multiple empty offensive possessions allowed the Thunder to surge to a 93-89 lead with 3:22 to play. Jameer Nelsons 3-pointer pulled the Magic within 96-94 before Durants fifth 3 of the night pushed it back to 99-94. After a badly missed jumper by Kendrick Perkins, Nelson kept the Magics momentum going and found Howard for an alley-oop. But Durant stayed hot with a 19-foot jumper that quickly stilled the crowd. Ryan Anderson banked in a 3 in the closing seconds and Daequan Cook missed a pair of free throws with 3.1 seconds left to set up Richardsons last heave. "Theres no chance to run when your defence is as bad as ours was in the fourth -- its going to hurt your offence," Van Gundy said. "The two go hand-in-hand, but we just literally didnt play any defence whatsoever in the fourth quarter." It was the Magic who were hot in the opening 24 minutes and took 53-50 lead into the break. Orlando held as much as a nine-point edge, shooting 55 per cent (21 for 38) in the half and connecting on six 3s. The Thunder shot 48 per cent (20 for 41), but the Magic also limited them to nine fast break points while holding a 24-20 advantage on points in the paint. It helped offset Westbrooks 17 first-half points, with Anderson pacing the Magic with 10 points. "Were getting better, man, were getting better," Durant said. "Playing against a great team like this at their place. Being down 11 going into the fourth. We could have easily just given in. But we kept playing, kept fighting, and guys made plays. Its a big time win for us." Notes: The Thunder improved to a Western Conference-best 14-6 on the road this season. ... Angel Pagan connects on the second pitch of the game
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Angel Pagan connects on the second pitch of the game. Britton Colquitt Jersey . A Giants team that finished last in homers goes on to hit three. Tim Lincecum pitches like a two-time Cy Young winner -- this time, out of the bullpen. So many unusual things moved San Francisco to the verge of an unprecedented comeback. Pagan hit the first leadoff homer in Giants post-season history, and Gregor Blanco and Pablo Sandoval connected later for an 8-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday that evened their NL division series at 2-all. No team has recovered from a 2-0 deficit in a best-of-five series by winning three on the road, according to STATS LLC. This one can do it with a victory on Thursday at Great American Ball Park. "Thanks to the win today, there will be a tomorrow," Pagan said. "And we are ready for that." Matt Cain, who lost the series opener and has yet to beat the Reds in three tries this season, will start Game 5 against Mat Latos. Facing elimination, the Giants slumping hitters came out swinging and extended Cincinnatis playoff misery. The Reds havent won a post-season game at home in 17 years. One thing in the Reds favour -- they havent dropped three straight at home all season. "Id like to think that we still have the advantage," Reds outfielder Jay Bruce said. "Were at home. I expect Mat to come up with a big game. Im looking forward to it." So are the Giants, who were down after losing the first two games at home while getting outscored 14-2. They were barely able to get a hit, let alone a win. The pressure pulled them closer. Hunter Pence gathered them for inspirational speeches before the two games in Cincinnati, challenging them to play like champions. "We feel good," NL batting champion Buster Posey said. "When youre down 0-2 you see what youre made of. Were not done." It wasnt all about the offence. San Franciscos overlooked Cy Young winner played a starring role, too. Lincecum was relegated to the bullpen for the playoff series because of his dreary season -- 15 losses, 17 wild pitches. He entered in the fourth inning, pitched out of a threat that kept the Giants up 3-2, and kept going. The right-hander struck out six while allowing just one run in 4 1-3 innings. "I knew he would play a huge role in this," manager Bruce Bochy said. "And I know of other situations where starters have been in the pen and really done a great job to help their team win. We knew Timmy would play a critical role in the series like he did tonight." The Reds were hoping to start ace Johnny Cueto, but had to drop him off the roster a few hours before Wednesdays first pitch because he was still bothered by a strained muscle in his right side. He wont be available if Cincinnati wins Game 5 and reaches the NL championship series. The way the Giants have started hitting, thats now in doubt. San Francisco managed only four runs in the first three games of the series. The Giants avoided the sweep by pulling out a 2-1 win in 10 innings on Tuesday night with the help of a passed ball and an error by third baseman Scott Rolen. They broke out against Mike Leake, who replaced Cueto and had a rough time. Leake threw his first career complete game in San Francisco on June 29 and was 3-0 career against the Giants. Pagan homered to start it off for the Giants. Blanco hit a two-run shot in the second. The Giants had another breakthrough in the fifth, when back-to-back doubles by Joaquin Arias and Pagan ended an 0-for-14 slump with runners in scoring position during the series. Sandovals two-run shot in the seventh made it 8-3, matched the Giants season high for homers and drew loud boos from the crowd of 44,375 -- the third-largest at Great American Ball Park. Fans quietly settled into their seats and used their white rally towels as lap warmers against the evening chill. The Giants normally dont hit many homers -- only 103 during the season, fewest in the majors. Theyre only the seventh team since 1900 to reach the playoffs after finishing last in the majors in homers. While the offence went to work, Lincecum bailed out the bullpen. Bochy didnt hesitate to put the guys he wanted on the mound, using four pitchers in the first four innings. Lincecum settled things down, giving up only two hits in his second relief appearance of the series. He threw 42 strikes out of 55 pitches and even batted twice -- just like a starter. "The last two games, its been about scratching and leaving it on the field," Lincecum said. Bochy decided to go with left-hander Barry Zito over Lincecum for Game 4 because he was better down the stretch. Zito was left off the post-season roster when San Francisco won the World Series in 2010, but finished the regular season with seven straight wins. The left-hander lasted only 2 2-3 innings, his shortest career outing in the post-season. On came Lincecum to save the day. The Reds finished with the second-best record in the majors at 97-65, one game behind Washington. The rotation was the foundation of their championship season, with all five starters making it through healthy -- a franchise first. Things changed dramatically when Cueto had to leave the first inning of the playoff series opener on Saturday with the injury. The Reds made it through that game with Latos filling in for a 5-2 victory, but couldnt win without him on Wednesday. LONDON -- Manchester City fought back after a second-half collapse against Southampton to open its title defence with a 3-2 victory against the Premier League newcomers on Sunday. Substitutes Rickie Lambert and Steven Davis put a dogged Southampton side 2-1 in front and wipe out Carlos Tevezs opener for City. But Samir Nasri spared City from an opening weekend upset by scoring an 80th-minute winner following Edin Dzekos equalizer. "We showed great character," Nasri told Sky Sports television. "We didnt panic." Chelsea had no such troubles overcoming Wigan in Sundays other match. New signing Eden Hazard made an immediate impact, setting up Branislav Ivanovics opener and winning the penalty from which Frank Lampard converted to clinch a 2-0 victory. For City, the new season picked up where the last one ended for pulsating drama at Etihad Stadium. A 3-2 victory in May against Queens Park Rangers -- secured in the final seconds -- ended Citys 44-year title drought. "It was like the last game of the season, weve started the same and I hope at the end it will be the same result for us," Nasri said. Although City didnt leave it until stoppage time on Sunday to produce the winner, manager Roberto Mancini hopes every game wont be as tough. "It is important to have this character, it is better the next time to close the game," Mancini said. "We had too many chances to close the game -- we didnt." City had to cope without Sergio Aguero from the 14th minute after last seasons top scorer fell awkwardly following Nathaniel Clynes challenge. The Argentina striker went to hospital for a scan on his injured knee, but the results wont be known for another two days. Citys fortunes didnt improve after Agueros injury. Even though Tevez won a penalty two minutes later, after falling to the ground under Jos Hooivelds challenge, David Silvas tame spot kick was easily saved by Kelvin Davis. Tevez found the target five minutes before halftime. He was fed through by Nasri and sneaked in front of Joe Fonte before sending the ball into the net at Davis near post. City squandered chances to extend its lead after the break, with Gael Clichy sweeping the ball over, and David Silva hitting the crossbar. City was made to pay for those misses when Lambert, last seasons top scorer in the second tier, scored his first topflight goal. Four minutes afterr coming off the bench, Lambert seized on confusion in the City defence and Joleon Lescotts missed clearance to side-foot the ball past goalkeeper Joe Hart.dddddddddddd Another substitute also quickly delivered. Steven Davis had been on the pitch only three minutes when he buried the ball into the bottom corner of the net in the 68th after City debutant Jack Rodwell had lost possession to Southampton inside his own half. But City recovered from its sloppiness, with Dzeko blasting in the equalizer four minutes later. Nasri secured the three points after Southampton left back Danny Fox inadvertently headed the ball to the France midfielder, who was booked for lifting his jersey in the goal celebration to reveal a t-shirt with the "Eid Mubarak" greeting to mark the end of Ramadan. "We deserved to win the game," Mancini said. "They didnt have any chances in the first half and we had four or five incredible chances." Chelsea made a surging start at Wigan following its tepid league campaign last year in which it finished sixth but made amends by winning the Champions League and FA Cup. Roberto Di Matteos side was in front after just two minutes, with Hazard turning Ivan Ramis and slipping the ball through for Ivanovic to race onto and dispatch into the Wigan net. "(Hazard) was brilliant," Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard said. "Its a young age to come into the Premier League, no matter how good of a player you are." Ramis was struggling to cope with Hazard and gave away a penalty when he fouled the Belgium international just five minutes after Ivanovics opener. Lampard scored from the spot, but the Blues couldnt build on the margin of the victory as Wigan finished with nothing to show for its domination. "They took their chances really well, they punished us massively," Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said. "It couldnt have been a harder test ... I thought Chelsea were happy to defend well and run the clock down, and I took that as a real compliment to the side." Manchester Uniteds quest for a 20th title doesnt start until Monday, when former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie will hope to make his debut at Everton. Evertons neighbour, Liverpool, was on the receiving end of the biggest shock of the opening weekend, with Brendan Rodgers new side losing 3-0 at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Leading up to SportsCentres Year In Review on Christmas Eve
Leading up to SportsCentres Year In Review on Christmas Eve, TSN and TSN. Nick Perry mens Jersey .ca look back at each of the Top 10 stories of 2012. And TSNs reporters and analysts who covered the events as they happened offer their personal reflections on the stories. Today, TSN and CTV personality Brian Williams looks back at Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps highlighting the memorable Olympic Summer Games in London. To get some perspective on the impact of the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London, its useful to look back at what took place two years earlier. Vancouver 2010 forever changed our country in a profoundly positive way. No longer are we apologizing for winning. Instead, we are justifiably taking pride in the many great accomplishments of our fellow citizens. The after-glow from Vancouver created an interest both in our Canadian athletes and in the London Games that was greater than any Summer Games I have seen, going back to my first in Montreal in 1976.  While the medal total was not quite what Canadian Olympic officials had predicted, and there was but one gold, the 2012 Games and the stories set forth by the Canadian athletes captivated this country like never before.  More on the Canadian athletes later on. There is no question that for Canadians, London was the perfect city to follow Vancouver. The culture, the history and of course the Royals struck a chord not just here in Canada but around the world.  And of course, London became the first city to host three Olympics (1908, 1948 and 2012) and that alone made it appealing and truly special.  The success of London 2012 makes it easy to forget that just two weeks before the Games began there was no noticeable buzz or Olympic fever in the British capital. That quickly changed for two key reasons. The first was the spectacular success of the Opening Ceremony. I spoke with the director Danny Boyle on the eve of the ceremony. He told me his goal to produce a "live" movie that would tell to the world a "uniquely British story." He certainly succeeded. From the colourful pageantry celebrating British history to the unlikely team of Queen Elizabeth and James Bond "parachuting" into the Olympic stadium, it all worked brilliantly. Even her Majestys corgis performed to perfection. The second reason the London Games captivated the world was the great success of the British athletes.  Remember that in Vancouver it was the record number of Canadian gold medals and Sidney Crosbys "golden goal" that put an exclamation mark on the Games, not only for Canada but for viewers around the world.  The exact same thing happened in London. Thanks to the Britains athletes, the lack of buzz just prior to the Games was quickly replaced by Olympic fever not just in Britain but around the world. Spectators rocked the many venues as the host countrys athletes began to pile up medals.  Fans and viewers around the world were caught up in the excitement.  And it is important to remember the faces of the British medalists reflected the multi-cultural makeup of the British Isles. Now lets get back to Team Canada. The cover story of the Aug. 20 edition of Macleans magazine featured the headline "Heroes and Heartbreak."   Canadas heroes were many, particularly Rosie MacLennans golden smile after winning on the trampoline. And there were Canadas divers, swimmers, canoeists, kayakers, weightlifters, judokas, cyclists, rowers and wrestlers. But the story that truly captured the country was the courageous and dramatic saga written by the womens soccer team.  Who can forget the three-goal performance for the ages by Christine Sinclair in the controversial loss to the heavily favoured U.S.? Sinclair, a well-deserved recipient of the Lou Marsh Award as Canadas top athlete for 2012, rallied with her teammates to put that loss behind them and defeat France for the bronze medal. It was the first team medal for Canada at the Summer Olympics since the mens basketball team won silver in Berlin in 1936. Then there was Derek Drouin, surprising everyone but himself with a bronze medal in the high jump - Canadas first since Greg Joys silver in 1976. And the heroes were not just medalists. Damian Warner turned in a remarkable performance to finish fifth in the decathlon. I say remarkable because the decathlon is the most grueling of all Olympic events. In fact, the only Canadian decathlon medal in Olympic history was Dave Steens bronze in Seoul in 1988, an achievement unfortunately overshadowed by the Ben Johnson scandal. As for the Canadian heartbreak in London, there was Simon Whitfields bicycle crash that took him out of the mens triathlon. And of course in Athletics, the stunning disqualification of the Canadian mens 4x100 metre relay team. Their apparent third place finish was put up on the stadium scoreboard, only to be taken down some 10 minutes later. Prince Edward Islands Jared Connaughton bravely went before the cameras, accepted responsibility for stepping on the line, and apologized to his teammates and the country. I can think of no better example of the ability to accept both victory and defeat with grace, class and dignity than that shown by coach Glenroy Gilbert and his inspirational young runners. Even Prince Harry when he visited our studio with his brother Prince William spoke of the spirit and heart of the Canadian athletes. He recalled sitting next to Canadian rower and medalist Malcolm Howard at Canada House as they cheered Canadas womens eight to silver. And during that same interview Prince William spoke of the Vancouver Olympics and how the success of the Canadian athletes inspired the country, adding that he hoped he would see the same happen in his own country.  Thanks to British athletes like heptathlete Jessica Ennis, distance runner Mo Farah and cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, William got his wish. Perhaps the biggest stars of London 2012 were a Jamaican sprinter and an American swimmer. Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps can truly be said to transcend the Olympic Games. In London, Phelps became the winningest Olympian of all time, bringing his career medal total to an incredible 22. Bolt won gold in the 100 metres, 200 metres and the 4 by 100 relay, duplicating the feat hed accomplished four years earlier in Beijing. The mere mention of those two Olympic icons ignites the argument as to who is the greatest Olympian. Because Phelps sport is swimming he competes in more events than Bolt.  But swimming is a more specialized sport than sprinting, so the field of competition is smaller. As Donovan Bailey said to me in our London studio, "not every able-bodied person swims, but they all run." Good point. But its countered by the fact that although the races Bolt runs may differ in terms of distance, his running technique remains basically the same. Phelps, however must compete in several events requiring very different styles. To me, the bottom line is that while its fun to debate the question, it is impossible to say who is the greatest overall. In closing it is important to remember that the Summer Olympics are the largest regularly scheduled peaceful gathering of nations, sporting or otherwise. As such they reflect the world as it exists at that moment in history. Athletes march behind their countries flags and listen to their national anthems when they stand on top of the medal podium.   Thus the Olympics are political by their very nature, and that was true in London in the Opening Ceremony when the IOC refused to honour the memory of the Israeli athletes massacred at the Munich Games in 1972. And 2012 was the 40th anniversary of that event. I have been fortunate to cover 14 Olympic Games, and London 2012 once again reminded me that while far from perfect, the Olympics in their purest form speak to sportsmanship, integrity and fair play. Mens Sylvester Williams Jersey . Numbers Game looks at the addition of Mike Ribeiro. Capitals Get: C Mike Ribeiro. Ribeiro, 32, has been a very productive player, scoring 348 points over the last five seasons, good enough for 20th overall in the league over that time frame. He scored 63 points last season, playing 20:07, the second-highest average time on ice of his career. Ribeiro started the season a little slow, with two goals and 15 points in his first 24 games, but finished the season particularly strong, scoring 48 points in his last 50 games as he formed a potent scoring line with Michael Ryder and Loui Eriksson for much of the year. Going into the final season of his contract, Ribeiro comes at a cap hit of $5-million and addresses Washingtons most glaring need, for a point-producing second-line centre behind Nicklas Backstrom. At this point of his career, Ribeiro figures to be more successful if he doesnt have to face the toughest defensive matchups night after night, as he tended to with Dallas. Stars Get: C/LW Cody Eakin and a second-round pick (54th overall). Eakin is a 21-year-old forward who split his first ppro season between the AHL and NHL.dddddddddddd. In Hershey, Eakin had 13 goals and 27 points with a plus-4 rating in 43 games, contributing four goals and eight points with a plus-2 rating in 30 games with the Capitals. Hes not expected to be a big scorer, even though he had some productive years in the WHL (174 points in 126 games his last two seasons), but Eakin is a solid two-way player who should have a good shot to earn a spot with the Stars next season. Its worth noting that Eakin finished his junior career on a Kootenay team with Stars prospect Matt Fraser. The second-round pick, (54th overall) gives Dallas about a 26% chance of landing an NHL-calibre player. Theres value, but slightly better than one-in-four isnt necessarily a huge difference. What the Stars get is younger, cheaper and at least one asset that they know will be around for years to come. In the short-term, there are offensive needs to be addressed, because Ribeiro was their third-leading scorer but, given Ribeiros contract status, it is understandable that Dallas took a long-term view. it seemed proper that their relievers played a big role in this win
SAN DIEGO -- To the San Diego Padres, it seemed proper that their relievers played a big role in this win. Danny Amendola Jersey men's . Before the Sundays game, the Padres found out that longtime bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds had died from pancreatic cancer. The team then went out and played one of its most complete games, with Edinson Volquez combining with three relievers to beat the Seattle Mariners 2-0. Two of the three relievers -- Joe Thatcher and Luke Gregerson -- credited Akerfelds with accelerating their careers. "That was fitting, wasnt it? Especially with the two guys he mentored, Joe and Luke," teary-eyed San Diego manager Bud Black said. "It was a good win. The outcome for all of us who have known him for a long time was special." Akerfelds, who pitched for five seasons in the major leagues, died in the morning at 50. He had been the bullpen coach for San Diego since June 2001. Akerfelds was diagnosed with cancer in December 2010. Last season, he was with the team for 148 of the 162 games despite undergoing chemotherapy. He was still with the team in the early part of this season. "There wasnt one point when it felt like a normal game," Gregerson said. "We spent most of the time out in the bullpen telling stories about Ack." Said Thatcher: "Today was awesome for us to come in and pitch like we did. It was tough out there." Black told the players about one hour before game time the news about Akerfelds, who had been with the organization since 1997. "As the game went on, it was a baseball game," Black said. "The dialogue, the chatter in the dugout was like a normal game. But when it got later and the game was on the line, it was little different." Thatcher relieved Volquez with a runner on first and two outs in the seventh, and retired Ichiro Suzuki on grounder. Gregerson pitched the eighth and allowed pinch hitter Kyle Seagers one-out double. He escaped when Justin Smoak hit a soft liner to second baseman Alexi Amarista, who doubled Seager off second. Volquez (4-7) was in command as he allowed just four singles in 6 2-3 innings and was not hurt by the control issues that have hampered him this season. Volquez, who leads the majors in walks with 55, walked three but was rarely stressed by the Mariners. Amarista provided the only runs Volquez needed with a two-run double in the fourth inning. Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 10th save in as many chances. Volquez won for just the second time in his last eight starts. He had been 1-5 with a 5.72 ERA in his last seven, while walking at least three in each of those outings. Hector Noesi (2-9) extended his career-high losing streak to six games. Hes tied with Baltimores Jake Arrieta for the major league lead in losses. Noesi had one of his better recent outings as he allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings. The right-hander has not won since May 6 against Minnesota. "I thought he threw the ball better," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "He was much more consistent, ready with everything." Seattle, which has lost three of four, did not have a runner advance past second base. The Mariners had scored 32 runs in the first five games of the road trip. The Padres loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth on a leadoff walk to Chase Headley and consecutive singles by Chris Denorfia and John Baker. Cameron Maybin hit a liner right back to Noesi, who caught the ball at the last moment. But on the next pitch, Amarista hit a ball over the head of left fielder Casper Wells that bounced into the stands for a two-run double. NOTES: Volquez is 3-0 in four career starts against the Mariners. ... Noesis other start against San Diego was a 1-0 loss on June 13 when he allowed the games only run on a home run. ... San Diego finished with an 8-7 interleague record, just the third time in 16 years of interleague play that the Padres had a winning record. The other years were 1999 and 2010. ... Padres 1B Yonder Alonso was out of the starting lineup to give his ailing knee a chance to rest. Alonso is also expected to be out of the lineup for Mondays game at Houston. ... Mariners RHP Erasmo Ramirez (0-1, 5.40 ERA) will face Athletics LHP Tommy Milone (7-5, 4.13) when Seattle returns home on Monday night. ... But Toronto FC (5-16-6) is happy to have him back, bleary-eyed and sniffly or not, as the Chicago Fire (13-8-5) come to visit Wednesday. Toronto is down a few hands with Terry Dunfield and Ashtone Morgan (Canada), Ryan Johnson and Dicoy Williams (Jamaica) and Quillan Roberts and Oscar Cordon (Canada under-20) all away on international duty. Freddy Hall and Reggie Lambe have been with Bermuda but are expected to be back in time for Wednesdays MLS game. French striker Eric Hassli, meanwhile, practised Monday after being sidelined with a rib injury. With Hall and Roberts away and Milos Kocic celebrating the birth of triplets (two boys and a girl) on Sunday night, Toronto had to use an academy keeper and goalie coach Stewart Kerr at practice Monday. Kocic is expected to be back for the Chicago game. ODea, meanwhile, was at practice Monday after forcing himself to stay up for most of Sunday. "I picked up a cold as well," he said. "Its been a tough week. "But Ive said (it) before, Id prefer to be doing that -- seeing different parts of the world playing football than sitting behind a desk." After a 2-1 loss in Kansas City on Sept. 1, ODea flew back with the team to Toronto. They arrived in the evening and ODea stayed at the airport, waiting for a flight to Ireland. He was in Ireland for a day and a half before travelling nine more hours and five time zones to Kazakhstan. "It basically just turned my whole day around," he explained. "I was sleeping in the day and awake at night. I played, then I had a 17-hour round trip to get back here. "It will be the toughest one I do," he added of the marathon trip with the national team. "I wouldnt want to be doing that very often." An 89th-minute penalty and stoppage time goal saved No. 26 Irelands blushes in a 2-1 win over the 142nd-ranked Kazaks. The 25-year-old ODea (pronounced ODee) will be making his fifth appearance for Toronto since signing Aug. 3. With Torsten Frings out injured, Toronto wasted little time giving the Irish international the captains armband. Assistant coach Jason Bent liked what he saw of ODea in training Monday despite his hectic travel schedule. "He looked sharp, he looked lively," said Bent.dddddddddddd"You can see from his training hes just so strong and vocal. And thats something we need to get more of in this club -- players that are vocal on the pitch. Not just rah-rah but good information and coaching all the time, organizing people. "For me, hes been fantastic with that, with his communication and leadership. And he attacks the ball." Bent pointed to a play at the beginning of the Sporting Kansas City game when the six-foot-one 180-pounder took on a KC attacker, separating the ball from the attacking and mashing the ball away. "Strikers dont want to play against that week in and week out," Bent said. ODea, who started his career for Celtic before loan spells in England with Reading, Ipswich Town and Leeds United, isnt sure why the MLS cant follow FIFAs international calendar more faithfully to ease the burden on players. "Its stupid," he said. "Fair enough you cant accommodate all countries but at least you could accommodate your own (Canada and the U.S.)," he added. He is skipping Irelands friendly against Oman on Tuesday in London to play for his club. ODea says he has found the standard of play in MLS to be better than what most people think in Britain. "In a few years people will know, because the information is getting there and the coverage is getting there," he said. "Ive loved it. Obviously results-wise it hasnt been great but I think weve not been playing too badly. Were close, were nearly there. Its just getting over the finishing line. "Hopefully we can start by getting a good result Wednesday." Toronto could use one. Mired in the league basement, the team has not won since July 18 when it beat Colorado 2-1. TFC has gone 0-5-2 in MLS play since. NOTES -- Toronto had former Sheffield Wednesday defender Luke Boden in camp Monday on a tryout ... Former Canada captain Paul Stalteri, looking fit and trim, made a social visit to practice to see former teammate Jim Brennan, now a TFC assistant coach. Out of contract in Germany and restored to health after hip surgery, the 34-year-old Stalteri is looking for a new club ... The day after a playoff loss to the New York Giants in January
GREEN BAY, Wis. Bruce Miller Jersey . -- The day after a playoff loss to the New York Giants in January, Donald Driver seemed resigned to the idea that he may have put on his Green Bay Packers uniform for the last time. A few months -- and one big TV dance contest victory -- later, Driver was back on the practice field for a workout Wednesday. And even if he had to restructure his contract to make it happen, and now faces significant competition within what might be the NFLs deepest group of receivers, the 37-year-old remains remarkably confident he still can be a productive receiver. "Age is just a number," Driver said. "You still play the game at a high level, and I havent declined. People talk about, well, I didnt have 1,000 yards. I didnt have 80 catches. I dont control who throws the ball. I cant control that. But every ball I caught, it was amazing. I made amazing catches, amazing runs. And hopefully when it is all said and done people will look at that." Driver wasnt willing to discuss the details of his restructured deal, although its safe to assume he took a pay cut. Driver had a year left on his previous deal, which would have paid him $5 million. "You know Im not going to spill all that," he said. "Im a Packer, thats all that matters." Another thing that wasnt clear: Whether Driver had any assurances from the Packers that hell make the roster coming out of training camp. Driver acknowledged the possibility, but said he doesnt expect to get cut. "I dont think were ever going to get into a bitter relationship," Driver said. "I dont think they want that, I dont want that. So I dont think itll ever happen. I think itll be two sides coming together like we did, and Im going to retire as a Packer." Besides, Driver still considers himself one of the teams top receivers. "Im still the starter until they tell me Im not," Driver said. "They havent told me Im not the starter." But after six straight seasons of at least 70 catches and 1,000 yards receiving, Driver caught 51 passes for 565 yards in 2010 and 37 passes for 445 yards last season. Driver writes off the decline in his productivity to the sheer number of talented targets the Packers have put around Aaron Rodgers, a group that includes Greg Jennings, Jermichael Finley, Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Randall Cobb. "Balls getting thrown to me? I cant control that," Driver said. "Back in the day, I used to be the guy. I had three guys on me, the ball was getting thrown to me anyway. Its not like that anymore. You dont have to be the guy to win games, and I think we realized that last year. And at first, yeah, it was tough. ... Once you get older, youre like, I dont have to have 80 catches. I dont have to have that. I dont have to have 1,000 yards. As long as Im productive, Im still playing at a high level, Ive proven that." Packers coach Mike McCarthy limited Drivers involvement in Wednesdays practice, but made it clear that it wasnt because he thought Driver got out of shape during his stint on ABCs "Dancing With the Stars." "Physically he looks great," McCarthy said. "Its not a question if we think hes in shape. We just want to be smart with him. Were probably going to keep him in a limited role this week." Despite spending 10 hours or more per day practicing for the show, Driver said he did football-related workouts from 8 to 10:30 a.m. every day. Driver hired a trainer in the Los Angeles area, brought his regular trainer out from Dallas and worked out with a few college players in the area. Driver said his body fat was just over 4 per cent when he started the show; now, he says its about 2 per cent. And while he doesnt think winning the show has changed him at all, he acknowledges that he had reached a new level of fame. "People were in the airport like, Youre that guy that just won "Dancing with the Stars,"" Driver said. "But Im like, I do play football. Theyre like, Yeah, no one cares about you playing football. But everyone does care about "Dancing with the Stars." And while so much of this off-season has been dominated by discussion of safety issues in football and the problems players run into once their careers are over, Driver said he isnt concerned. "At the end of the day you hope that you can walk away from the game with a sound mind," Driver said. "If you dont then we lose friends. No one knows how we lose these guys whether it is brain damage or not to cause these things to happen. We lost some great men. Junior Seau, played against him for so many years. Great man, great father. Thats the situation. Why? No one knows. You dont ever want to stop playing because you think about the injuries. If thats the case they might as well stop football, period. And theyre not going to that." Dane Fletcher Jersey . "While he continues to make progress in the rehabilitation of his injured right ankle, it was determined that he is not yet 100 percent and it is doubtful that he will play the remainder of the 2011-12 season," the team said in a statement.Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) announced on Tuesday that Tom Anselmi has been appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of the company. The move means that Anselmi will oversee all MLSE operations, including those of its Major League Soccer team, Toronto FC. Anselmi spoke with TSN Radios James Cybulski Tuesday, and had some interesting comments to make about a conversation Anselmi had recently with MLS commissioner Don Garber: "Were the only (expansion) team that started from scratch. Most of these (expansion) franchises had infrastructure in place and were playing in a league somewhere, and we were behind the eight ball. It was probably something (having an infrastructure) that we didnt take seriously enough. So were playing catch up now, and weve got to get it right on the field, theres no doubt about it." Getting it right "on the field" is impossible unless you first get it right "off the field." There will be many who point to Anselmis decision to outsource the hiring of TFCs current technical team to U.S.-based consultant Jurgen Klinsmann and his company, Soccer Solutions, as evidence that Anselmi is incapable of getting it right. And they would be correct – to an extent. If youre not confident that you have the answers yourself, you hire people that you think do. One doesnt reach the heights of corporate leadership that Anselmi has by repeating mistakes, and I would be shocked if he went back to the Klinsmann well for another bucket of advice. That doesnt, however, mean that Tom Anselmi shouldnt be seeking outside council. My suggestion, for what its worth, is to look a little closer to home. The club needs to hire a new President, someone who will effectively take oover the position that Anselmi is vacating.dddddddddddd. This person does not need to be Canadian, but must – absolutely must – have extensive experience in the world of football. So how does Anselmi go about finding this person? Start by putting together a Canadian advisory group – not just one person – who has experience working within the world of football. Use the cumulative knowledge of this group to oversee the recruitment and hiring of a top-class President. Our country is littered with bright football minds that have represented Canada as players, coaches and administrators. Does Toronto FC want a team with a Canadian identity that can be successful? Then tap into the vast resources we have in our country to help find the person that can help deliver that identity. Many of the individuals who should be considered for this advisory group were once season ticket holders at Toronto FC. They would come to BMO Field to support the club - despite its continued failures on the field - in the hope that over time, things would improve. They would argue about players, coaches and tactics as only passionate football people can do. It was a travesty that the club did not employ some of them, as their knowledge is only gained the hard way – through experience. Sadly, many of them no longer go to games. They gave up their season tickets out of frustration. Not at the results on the field, but at the poor decisions made over and over again by those in charge of the club. If this isnt a major concern for Toronto FC, then it should be. The club is not going to win these people back unless it gets its next move right. Fix the problems off the field, and success on the field will follow.

"In Japan we say you grab your cheek, you twist your cheek, to see if its real or not, to see if Im not dreaming," Suzuki said. "And thats really how I feel right now." Oh it was real all right, Ichiro. Raul Ibanez and Russell Martin hit two-run homers, Curtis Granderson capped the scoring with an eighth-inning grand slam and the Yankees powered past the Boston Red Sox 10-3 on Friday night. In Suzukis first home game with the Yankees, Phil Hughes (10-8) gave up three solo homers but little else in seven innings to help the Yankees beat Boston for the sixth time in seven games this year -- New Yorks best start to a season against the Red Sox since opening 6-0 in 1994. The rivals were meeting in the Bronx for the first time this year, the latest in a non-strike season the teams have met at Yankee Stadium. New York was returning from a rough 2-5 trip in which the Yankees lost Alex Rodriguez to a broken hand. The Red Sox had won just once in six games coming in. The loss dropped them to 49-51. "Were two games under .500. Were the Boston Red Sox, so if anyones thrilled with where were at they better reevaluate because I dont like losing. I know everyone else doesnt like losing," Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. "Weve got to play better, now." With the Red Sox foundering in last place in the AL East and David Ortiz and Rodriguez on the disabled list, it felt as if the rivalry had lost some of its lustre. Suzukis presence helped give the game some buzz. The 10-time All-Star was dealt to New York during its visit to Seattle on Monday. He started in right field and batted eighth Friday. Suzuki was met with a sustained ovation followed by chants of "Iiiichiro," when he came up for the first time in the second inning. He hit a fly to centre field. In his second at-bat, he singled and scored on Martins two-run homer to left field off Aaron Cook (2-4). Suzuki finished 1-for-4 and scored twice, including his first run with the Yankees. ""It has been a while since this type of experience," Suzuki said of the atmosphere and winning attitude in New York. Almost as if they were toying with Boston in Bobby Valentines first trip to New York as a manager since he was fired by the Mets in 2002, the Yankees scored in the bottom half of each of the three innings the Red Sox homered. Pedroia gave Boston the lead with a drive to left off Hughes on a full-count pitch in the first.ddddddddddddBut Ibanez followed with a two-run shot in the bottom half when the Yankees scored three times after the Red Sox failed to turn what could have been an easy inning-ending double play. With runners on first and third and shortstop Mike Aviles behind second base in a shift, Mark Teixeira hit a routine grounder to Pedroia. He made a quick toss to Aviles, who was slow to make the turn and Teixeira beat the throw. A run scored and Ibanez then hit a line drive into the first few rows of the short right field porch. "Tex did a great job of hustling that out," Ibanez said. "He was responsible for that inning." Valentine said of the missed opportunity: "Hes playing the shift and he comes over to the base from the other side. It was an awkward throw," he said. In the third, Carl Crawford homered for the first time this season -- in his 10th game -- after missing the first 90 because of wrist surgery and several setbacks. Teixeira had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning. The catchers traded long balls in the fourth. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit his 20th of the year. Martin responded with his 11th for a 6-3 lead. Hughes retired 10 of his final 11 batters, allowing only a walk to Jacoby Ellsbury in the fifth. Overall he yielded five hits and one walk. Hughes struck out five. The three homers gave him 25, tying him for the major league lead with Seattles Jason Vargas. "He did a nice job after we got the lead to 6-3," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He settled down nicely." Cook gave up six runs and seven hits in four innings for Boston. Yankees third baseman Eric Chavez was hit by a pitch above the right ankle in the eighth. X-rays were negative but he said the leg was sore. Already not scheduled to play Saturday, Chavez said he was not sure if he would be able to pinch-hit Saturday. He has to see how he feels in the morning. Granderson hit the Yankees seventh grand slam this season off former New York reliever Mark Melancon. The Los Angeles Dodgers left Pittsburgh in a bad mood
PITTSBURGH -- The Los Angeles Dodgers left Pittsburgh in a bad mood, and it had little to do with the end of their four-game winning streak. Seth Joyner Jersey . Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp and manager Don Mattingly were ejected, and teammates Joe Blanton and Hanley Ramirez also had testy exchanges with home plate umpire Angel Campos in Los Angeles 10-6 loss to the Pirates on Thursday. "We came here having won the first three games of the series. Were not a frustrated team," Mattingly said. "Were not trying to cause any trouble. Its not like weve lost 10 of 11 and looking for a fight. Were here ready to play baseball, and to have Matt taken out of the game is not right." James Loney and Hanley Ramirez homered for Los Angeles, which leads the NL West by a half-game over San Francisco. The Dodgers had won six of seven and all six prior meetings with the Pirates this season. The primary topic in the Dodgers clubhouse was the ejections the team felt were unwarranted. The dismissal of Kemp during the top of the second inning set off a lengthy argument that was mostly directed at Campos. Kemp struck out to end the first. He and Mattingly confirmed that the Dodgers were barking about balls and strikes when Andre Ethier led off the following inning, prompting Campos to deliver an unofficial warning to the team. "Then I said, Lets go Dre, and he tossed me out of the game," Kemp said. "Youve got two teams going at it in a pennant race. Were trying to build the lead against the Giants and Arizona, and I get thrown out for cheering my teammate." Kemps ejection angered Mattingly, who sprinted out to Campos. Kemp wasnt far behind, and needed to be restrained, at different times, by Mattingly, teammate Shane Victorino, bench coach Trey Hillman and other umpires. He bumped into an umpire at least once. After a few minutes of arguing, Mattingly was ejected by crew chief Tim Tschida. Mattingly stayed on the field for several more minutes of animated discussion before an umpire summoned Hillman to come out to retrieve Mattingly. "This isnt about being mad," Mattingly said. "This is something that has to go above me. It needs to go to the league. Were in a pennant race, and Ive got a guy who was second in the MVP (voting) last year, and you cant take him out of the game for cheering for a teammate. If we had gone out of control, thats different. This is just unacceptable behaviour (by Campos)." Mattinglys ejection was his sixth this season; Kemp was tossed for the first time. The incident wasnt the only contentious one on a steamy 84-degree afternoon. Blanton ran toward Campos as he was walking off the field after being removed following Pedro Alvarezs homer. Ramirez also drew Campos ire for throwing his bat down in disgust after striking out in the sixth. Pirates starter A.J. Burnett, who called a players meeting before Wednesdays game, was most angry after the Dodgers took their only lead in the fourth when Ramirez hit a two-run homer. As Ramirez rounded second base during his home-run trot, he circled his eyes with his fingers as he turned in the direction of Burnett. The gesture is a trademark of Ramirezs. "If youre going to hit a homer, act like youve hit one before," Burnett said. "The first batter, Loney, hit one and was very professional about it. Ran hard the whole way. I just thought he did a little something at second base. I could be wrong. It was heat of the moment." When Ramirez struck out swinging to end the sixth, Burnett screamed at him as he walked off the mound. Ramirez was reprimanded by Campos for throwing his bat, and the two had a somewhat-heated discussion. "I was just excited to get him out," Burnett said. "Every time someone clicks one off you, you want to get him out the next time up. He drove one that went pretty far, and then I was able to get him out, so I was pretty fired up." Two batters after Kemps ejection, Loney homered for the first time since May 21 and the third time this season. Garrett Jones hit two three-run homers for a career-high six RBIs, and Burnett became the first Pirates pitcher with 15 wins in 13 years for Pittsburgh. The Pirates had lost six of seven, and had won only three of their previous 10 games during their longest homestand of the season. Burnett (15-4) allowed six runs, seven hits, and a walk, and he two hit batters, but he was good enough to become the first Pirates pitcher to win 15 games since Todd Ritchie in 1999. Burnett had seven strikeouts. "He came out knowing whats at hand here, and to put a foot down," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "And then the game probably added to his edge, sharpened his edge, just because the game was all over the place." Alvarez hit his 22nd home run as part of a 3-for-4 day. Clint Barmes added three RBIs for the Pirates, who entered the day tied with St. Louis for the NLs second wild card spot. Jordy Mercer and Andrew McCutchen were on base both times Jones homered, in the first and fifth innings. The second shot to right elicited a curtain call for Jones, who has 20 home runs this season and five career two-homer games. Blanton (8-11), who declined comment on the umpiring, fell to 0-2 since being acquired in a trade from Philadelphia. Blanton gave up eight runs, seven hits and a season-high four walks in 4 1-3 innings. Notes: The Dodgers had beaten the Pirates nine straight times, dating to last year. ... The Dodgers were looking for their first four-game sweep in Pittsburgh in 63 years. ... NEW YORK -- Carlos Marmols high-wire act almost undid a game the Chicago Cubs ultimately won behind two young players full of promise. Anthony Rizzo hit a three-run homer Travis Wood won his fourth straight start, but not until after Marmol caught a line drive and started a game-ending double play that blunted the New York Mets bid for another ninth-inning comeback, giving Chicago an 8-7 victory Friday night. "It was getting interesting but he pulled it off," Wood said. Mets star Johan Santana was tagged for a career high-tying 13 hits in only 4 2-3 innings. A night after they got two runs with two outs in the ninth to beat Philadelphia closer Jonathan Papelbon, the Mets scored three times off a wild Marmol. But with runners at first and second, Lucas Duda hit a liner up the middle that Marmol speared and flipped to first for the final out. Reed Johnson led off the game with a homer, had four hits of Chicagos season-high 18 hits and scored three runs. Rizzo, the Cubs most hyped prospect this season, singled in the eighth for the first four-hit game of his big league career. Rizzo and Wood were both acquired in trades before the season by new Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer. The Cubs, whose 32-51 record is half a game from the NL cellar, could trade Marmol, who lost his closing job once already earlier this season and has been no stranger to shaky outings. He has 28 walks in 25 2-3 innings, though he has been better recently than he was to start the season. The same could be said of the Cubs, who are 7-3 since Rizzo was called up June 26 -- in a game against the Mets. "For 10 games, hes been pretty good," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "To sit on pitches like he does, and have an educated guess like he does is impressive." Rizzo and Jeff Baker each homered in a five-run fifth inning that made it 7-2. The Cubs held on to win for the eighth time in 11 games and sent the Mets to their third loss in nine games. "It was awesome, right from Reed Johnsons home run," Rizzo said. "And it carried over. Hitting is contagious no matter where you are." Wood (4-3) allowed two earned runs and was removed after walking pinch-hitter Jordany Valdespin to start the seventh. "I dont think he had the stuff hes had the last few," Sveum said. "He definitely didnt have the stuff hes had in the past." Marmol had a rocky ninth. Entering with a four-run lead, he gave up a solo homer to Valdespin with one out, then walked Ruben Tejada, pinch hitter Daniel Murphy and Davvid Wright to load the bases.dddddddddddd Pinch-hitter Ike Davis followed with a single, bringing up Duda. Marmols quick reflexes saved the Cubs. In the fifth, Santana fell awkwardly while trying to cover first base on an infield grounder by Johnson. Preparing to take the throw from first baseman Justin Turner, Santana reached out with his foot and apparently got stepped on, then couldnt handle the toss with his bare hand and fell on his side. He took two warmup pitches and remained in the game, but gave up two homers and four more singles after that. "Obviously, command of his fastball went awry," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "He said it wasnt his foot. He told me afterward his foot was fine. He just didnt make his pitches after that." Santana (6-5) left after Luis Valbuenas RBI single. Valbuena was thrown out trying to take second and Wood was coming to the plate with two outs, but Collins pulled him anyway. Johnsons grounder to start the fifth was ruled a single, and Santana allowed another single to Darwin Barney before Rizzos drive. One out later, Baker hit a solo shot and then Geovany Soto, Joe Mather and Valbuena singled. The Mets went ahead 2-1 on Dudas solo homer in the second and Ronny Cedenos RBI double in the third. Mike Nickeas added a sacrifice fly in the sixth for an unearned run against Wood. Alfonso Soriano tacked on a run with a bases-loaded bloop single in the eighth to make it 8-3. Turner hit an RBI single in the eighth for his fourth hit of the game. NOTES: Sveum says RHP Ryan Dempster will start Sunday, and be limited to 70-80 pitches. Veteran defenders Adrian Cann and Ty Harden are among six players who wont be back with Toronto FC next season
TORONTO -- Veteran defenders Adrian Cann and Ty Harden are among six players who wont be back with Toronto FC next season. Justin Smith Jersey . The Major League Soccer team announced Thursday that it had declined options on Cann and Harden, along with defender Dicoy Williams, midfielder Oscar Cordon, and forwards Nicholas Lindsay and Keith Makabuya. Letting Cann, Williams and Harden go signals that the team was not happy with its defensive depth, hardly surprising in a team that allowed a franchise-worst 62 goals this season. The moves are also likely not the last as TFC looks to revamp its roster after a disastrous season. Cann, Williams and Lindsay all suffered long-term knees injuries, coming back at various times this season. Harden was sidelined most of the season with an abdominal injury. Lindsay missed the better part of two seasons after wrecking his knee in a snowmoblie accident and only saw brief action at the end of the 2012 campaign. Salary issues were also likely a concern. Cann, a former TFC player of the year who later held out over a contract battle, made US$134,750 last season. Harden made $98,666. Williams, a Jamaican international, made $53,500 while the other two were at the minimum of $44,000. Like Lindsay, Cordon and Makubuya were Toronto FC Academy products. The 32-year-old Cann made 65 appearances during his three seasons with Toronto FC. He signed with the club on April 12, 2010 as a free agent after leaving Esbjerg FB of Denmark. He has also earned nine international caps for Canada. The 28-year-old Harden, acquired in a trade with Colorado in 2010, made 58 appearances with the club. Williams, 26, made 13 appearances during two seasons. Lindsay, 20, signed with the first team in 2010 as the second Academy graduate in club history and made six appearances in his first season with the club. Cordon and Makubuya, both 19, signed with the first team on March 17, 2011 after graduating from the Academy. Cordon made six appearances in two seasons, while Makubuya made two substitute appearances over two seasons. Lawrence Taylor Jersey . The Blue Jays swept the Philadelphia Phillies in three games over the weekend and entered the series having lost three straight and six of seven games. He went from winning tournaments to missing cuts. Phil Simms Jersey .J. -- The New York Red Bulls have traded midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy to the San Jose Earthquakes and an international spot and a conditional draft pick next season. Vernon Davis Jersey . -- Twice in the three weeks since he took over as Denvers starting quarterback, Tim Tebow has had one of his sacks erased by the NFLs statistics keepers after reviews of the game film.SEATTLE -- Under the heading of "catchers" on the Seattle Mariners 40-man roster, there is just one name. That is the challenge being placed before Jesus Montero. Ultimately, he wont have to do it all by himself, but there is no question that Seattle is heading into spring training with the idea that Montero will be its primary catcher. Throw in that Montero is just 23 and headed into his second full season in the majors and the task becomes even more significant. If there is a major position player concern for the Mariners as they head into spring training in about two weeks, its their depth behind the plate, where Montero is currently the only sure thing Seattle has. There are a handful of spring training invitees who very well could make the final roster out of spring, and some additional roster moves general manger Jack Zduriencik could make. But for now, Montero is preparing himself to be Seattles everyday catcher. Is it a risk to rely so heavily on the youngster? Maybe, especially since he caught only 56 games last season for Seattle. But Montero has a pretty strong understanding of what is going to be asked of him. "Im preparing myself to catch every day if I can catch every day," Montero said during the Mariners annual fan gathering last weekend. "Everybody knows that sometimes I get tired, everybody gets tired. Im going to try to be behind home plate every single time." Whether Montero can become an everyday catcher was one of the primary questions when Seattle traded for him before the start of the 2012 season. Because of the catching rotation he was involved in during his rookie season, there wasnt much resolved about Monteros future as a full-time catcher. But with the departures of Miguel Olivo (free agent) and John Jaso (trade), the position is now Monteros alone. There is help on the way in the minors with last years first-round pick Mike Zunino and prospect John Hicks, but neither one is likely to make the Mariners roster out of spring. "Its more on the mental than the physical side of things. I dont have any doubt he can handle it from a talent perspective, that he can handle the role fundamentally," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "But being so young and inexperienced, the mental grind . we ask a great deal of our catchers here. Andd then the physical grind that goes along with it, thats pretty real.ddddddddddddBut he knows hes coming here to catch. Itll ultimately be my decision in regard to how much he does catch, but were going to ask him to catch as much as we feel he can to go out there and perform the way hes capable of performing." Montero is coming off a rookie season that ebbed and flowed like most first seasons do. At times he was the Mariners best hitter and at others he looked young and frustrated at the plate. He finished the year hitting .260 with 15 homers and 62 RBIs. Part of the situation heading into this season is that Seattle needs Montero to be its primary catcher to keep his bat in the lineup and help figure out a logjam of new acquisitions who all could fill the designated hitter spot -- Monteros primary role in his rookie season. The Mariners traded for Kendrys Morales and Michael Morse, and signed Jason Bay and Raul Ibanez, all of whom could likely see playing time at a variety of positions this season. But to maximize the potential of a lineup thats been offensively the worst in baseball the last three years, they need Montero catching and not taking up the designated hitter spot. Montero was significantly better as a hitter in his rookie season when he was catching. In the 56 games he caught, Montero hit .310 with a slugging percentage of nearly .500, 10 home runs and 32 RBIs. His power numbers dipped significantly as a DH, despite getting nearly 100 more at-bats. Montero hit just five homers as a DH, struck out 60 times and had a slugging percentage of just .310. "Being in the big leagues, its not easy, but I know that now. Now I know how its going to be this year," Montero said. Montero was also given the challenge in the off-season of trimming his frame, cutting down on his body fat and becoming a better runner. At first glance last weekend, Montero appeared to have slimmed down and said, "I learned to run." Just to make sure Montero understood what Seattle was asking, he was brought in last week to be looked over by team personnel to make sure he took his off-season program seriously. "Last year, you know Im slow, but (I think) I can run a little better and I gain a little more speed," Montero said. "Thats what I did, was run."

The Moose Jaw defenceman
Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Morgan Rielly scored late in the third period to give the Moose Jaw Warriors a hard-fought 2-1 win on Wednesday over the Vancouver Giants in Western Hockey League action. Kendall Hunter Jersey. The Moose Jaw defenceman, from nearby West Vancouver, scored off his own rebound from a tight angle at 15:09 of the third period to give the Warriors (10-11-7) their second win in a row. Fellow defenceman Kendall McFaull scored his first goal of the season for Moose Jaw on the power play at 18:30 of the opening period to tie the game 1-1. Tristan Sieben opened the scoring for Vancouver (7-18-0) with a wrap-around goal at the 3:20 mark. It was one of only two shots on goal by the Giants in the first period, even though they had two power-play opportunities. The Warriors had 14 shots in the period, and lived up to their billing as the seventh-best power-play team in the WHL when a seemingly innocuous long-range shot from McFaull squeezed between the goalies legs. Vancouver lost its fifth in a row despite a fine evening from goaltender Payton Lee, who made 32 saves. His Moose Jaw counterpart Justin Paulic only had to make 15 saves. The Warriors went 1 for 5 with the man advantage while the Giants were 0 for 4. Elsewhere in the WHL it was: Swift Current 5 Brandon 1; Lethbridge 6 Prince Albert 4; Kootenay 5 Edmonton 4 (SO) and Kelowna 3 Tri-City 2. Broncos 5 Wheat Kings 1 At Brandon, Man., Chance Lund had a goal and an assist to lead Swift Current (11-12-5) past the Wheat Kings (10-15-3). Hurricanes 6 Raiders 4 At Prince Albert, Sask., Jaimen Yakubowski scored twice and added two assists as Lethbridge (14-13-3) sank the Raiders (18-8-2). Ice 5 Oil Kings 4 (SO) At Cranbrook, B.C., Sam Reinhart and Luke Philp scored in the shootout as Kootenay (8-15-1) slipped past Edmonton (16-5-5). Philp also had back-to-back goals in the third period for the Ice. Rockets 3 Americans 2 At Kelowna, B.C., Dylen McKinlay snapped a 2-2 tie in the second period, and set up a pair of first period goals by Myles Bell, to lead the Rockets (16-8-2) past Tri-City (16-9-2). Storm, leading since the first round, began the day with a three-stroke advantage, which he extended to five when he birdied the 12th hole on the Hilversumsche course. But consecutive bogeys at 13 and 14 and a string of pars left him at 1-under 69 and tied with Pablo Larrazabal (64), Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (66) and Scott Jamieson (66) at 12 under. Peter Hanson of Sweden was a stroke behind after carding a 67. and three shots off the pace were Scotlands Richie Ramsay (64) and Englands Danny Willett (66) were three shots off the pace. Storm said he was disappointed with how he finished the round, particularly with his three-putt on 18. "A birdie there would have put me at 13-under par but now I find myself tied for the lead," he said. "It would have been nice to just have a few shots lead but its not to be so I am at the top with three others, and all to play for." Larrazabal, who followed Storm in 2008 as French Open winner, capped his bogey-free round with five birdies over his last six holes.ddddddddddddThe Barcelona golfer had just eight putts over his last seven holes. Larrazabal is seeking his third European Tour title and first since last years BMW International Open in Munich. "It was a great finish because I was 3 over par after five holes on Thursday and now I am 12 under with 18 holes to play," Larrazabal said. "I have been practicing hard to get myself again in this position and hopefully I will be there on top tomorrow afternoon." Jamieson also enjoyed a good finish with birdies on three of his closing four holes. "I would have taken 4-under par when I started the day," Jamieson said. "It was a bit of a slow start but the three-putt for bogey on 11 was kind of a kick up the backside and then I played well from there on." Fernandez-Castano, who double-bogeyed the ninth hole, ended with a flourish with three birdies over his last four holes. Hanson, who has not tasted success since qualifying for the 2010 Ryder Cup by winning the Czech Open, birdied his closing two holes. New Ryder Cup pick Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium shot a 67 and was 8 under for the tournament.

Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista is not expected to return immediately
TORONTO -- Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista is not expected to return immediately when his time on the 15-day disabled list concludes Wednesday. Marshal Yanda Jersey . He swung the bat Saturday for the first time since injuring his left wrist. Bautista, who led the majors in home runs in both 2010 and 2011, was hurt in the eighth inning of a July 16 game at Yankee Stadium, grabbing his wrist in pain after hitting a long foul ball. He swung a light fungo bat, then his regular bat before Saturdays game against Detroit, and took a few swings off the tee. Bautista is eligible to come off the DL on Aug. 1, but Blue Jays manager John Farrell said the All-Star outfielder will likely need a few more days to fully recover. Bautista was leading the AL with 27 home runs at the time of his injury but has since been passed by Adam Dunn, Curtis Granderson and Josh Hamilton. Mario Manningham Jersey . The Arizona Cardinals can only wish they were as set at the position. Locker threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns in his home debut as Tennessees starting quarterback, and the Titans beat the Cardinals 32-27 on Thursday night. Phil Simms Jersey . -- Much has changed since the All-Stars last pulled into town in 1973. http://philadelphiaeagleshotsale.com/ . Andre Hainault, Will Bruin and Kofi Sarkodie each scored second-half goals to give the Houston Dynamo a 3-1 win over D. Todd Herremans Jersey . -- Ted Ligety simply cant be caught these days. Devin McCourty Jersey .ca, as fans can determine the play that tops em all in the fourth-annual TSN Play of the Year Showdown: Canadian Football Edition. As a division, the AFC South belongs to the Texans. Yes, the Titans could very well improve on their 9-7 record and 2011 playoff appearance, but back in Week 7 last year, Houston beat Tennessee 41-7.  The Titans won their second meeting 23-22 late in the season, but had no meaning for Houston. Both the Colts and Jaguars are re-building with unproven players at QB. The point is, head-to-head, Houston should have their way with the rest in the AFC South. Its amazing how the division has changed in recent time. The once-dominant Colts will probably finish last, and the former doormats from Houston will likely finish first. The Texans just have to develop a more aggressive take it mentality. Houston Texans:  Its easy to say the Texans are a possible Super Bowl team. And as much as their great players are the main reason for this, everything changed in the right direction when Gary Kubiak hired Wade Phillips to run his defence.  In one year the Texans went from 32nd to 3rd in pass defence and 30th to 2nd in overall defence.  Even with the loss of Mario Williams, they have a young rotation of pass rushers that suggests they can continue the excellence in 2012. I am a strong believer that good players win, but I cannot remember a defensive co-ordinator that has made a bigger impact than Phillips in Houston. Maybe Dom Capers or Dick Lebeau , but not many have changed everything so fast and so effectively. With maybe the best backfield combination in the league, Arian Foster and Ben Tate, and Matt Schaub throwing to Andre Johnson, there is little reason to doubt the offence either – unless the injury bug keeps these players off the field again.  What will make or break the Texans this year are the games against the NFC North . Houston will host Green Bay, play at Chicago and at Detroit within one month.  Assuming Houston cleans up against divisional opponents, those three games may determine if the Texans will get home field advantage in the playoffs or be forced to play on the road. If they can beat those teams and grab home field advantage, they will have truly earned it. That might be getting a bit ahead of things, but its safe to say the Texans are a great bet to repeat as AFC South champions and should be among the favourites in the AFC. Tennessee Titans:  The Titans should be the second-best team in the AFC south, but its tough to decide how good they will actually be. The No. 1 question is the development of Jake Locker at QB. Is he ready to take over from Matt Hasselbeck? Is he ready to take over and win? At one time, Locker was considered the best quarterback in the Pac 12, not Andrew Luck. How he progresses or regresses will determine the Titans fortunes for many years to come. The other reason for excitement in Tennessee is the return of RB Chris Johnson, who missed training camp in a contract dispute and never got on track last season.  Happy and healthy, Johnson is a game-breaker.  Johnson can take over a game in two ways. First, he can score early and often and from anywhere. Second, once the Titans get in front, he can carry the ball to kill the clock and maintain the lead. Not many running backs can do both and do them as well as Johnson. With veterans on the offensive line such as guard Steve Hutchison and tackles Dave Stewart and Micheal Roos, we might see a 2,000 yard season from Johnson. If Kenny Britt can stay healthy, stay focused and stay out of trouble, he can be a top 10, maybe even a top five NFL receiver, but that "if" word has to be eliminated from the conversation. The Titans defense is a bit of an unknown. There are no big proven names and they lost some veterans in free agency. Can Tennessee defend everything Houston will throw at them? I dont see it happening. With Mike Munchak as head coach, and Bruce Matthews as his top assistant, theere is every reason to expect a very fundamentally sound Titans team this year.dddddddddddd  In 2011 they won nine games and could have won three others.  With Johnson helping to protect Lockers development, I could see Tennessee winning 10 games and challenging for a playoff berth, but not first place. Indianapolis Colts:  I dont know if the success of the Colts is more dependent on rookie QB Andrew Luck or if it is more dependent on everyone around him.  It was amazing to watch a team that had previously won 13, 12, 14, and 10 games disintegrate to 2-14 without Peyton Manning. And those two wins came against Tennessee and Houston, two pretty good teams, in weeks 14 and 16. You know Luck is going to be good; it is just a matter of health and time. But how will the defence perform under new coordinator Greg Manusky? Last year they held opponents to under 20 points four times, but remember that Saints game in New Orleans in Week 7?  The 62-7 loss was an all-time low for the Colts. Of the ten draft picks they made in April, only two were on defence.  The two most intriguing picks were the two TEs. Colby Fleener out of Stanford and Dwayne Allen out of Clemson have a special opportunity to grow with Luck and the offence. I think that the speed at which the defence and the rookie tight ends improve will be more important to Luck than his own personal improvement.  This is a new Colts team is many ways. Ryan Grigson is the GM instead of Bill Polian, Luck takes over at QB while Manning landed in Denver, there is a new physical philosophy on defence, eight new free agents and 16 former Colts gone - many with Super Bowl rings. But in the results-based era we live in today, I think the Colts are going to be a better team than anticipated. Indy opens at Chicago against Jay Cutler and the Bears. I dont see a win game one, but I see five or six wins over the 2011 schedule. Thats better than most expectations and should be good enough for third in the AFC South. Jacksonville Jaguars:  It is difficult to see QB Blaine Gabbert moving for average at best to excellence I one year.  Yes, he will have Maurice Jones- Drew, a good receiver in Laurent Robinson and an explosive rookie in Justin Blackmon, but after posting a 50 percent completion mark and a 12:11 touchdown to interception ratio and 13 fumbles, he has a lot to improve. There are two points of major optimism, though. First, the Jaguars are a top ten defensive football team. They improved from 31st to 7th in one year, and have the same co-ordinator back in Mel Tucker. So as training camp moves on it is not about teaching as much reviewing what has already been taught, and that means the Jags might be able to ramp up the defence even more. Second, by the end of the season the Jaguars had 25 players listed on injured reserve, a remarkably high number.  So if they can maintain health, quality depth will be available, a luxury that was not evident last year. An unknown is new ownership. Shad Khan will bring a new energy, new money, and a new attitude. Sometimes its the best thing that can happen (see Arthur Blank and the Falcons), or it can be the worst thing that can happen (see Daniel Synder and the Redskins). You dont really know until five years or so after the purchase. An interesting fact about new head coach Mike Mularkeys staff. It includes five former offensive co-ordinators, including Mularkey himself. How is that going to be managed? I dont like to put too much on the QB position because there is a lot more that that has to happen for a team to reach excellence, but in a division that has Shaub, Luck and Hasselbeck/Locker, the lowest bar is in Jacksonville. They will need another 1,606 yards from Jones-Drew this year, maybe more, and an early holdout isnt a good start. Jack to the back of the pack, fourth in the AFC South.

The Niagara IceDogs capped off a banner-raising evening
ST. Bryant McKinnie Jersey . CATHARINES, Ont. -- The Niagara IceDogs capped off a banner-raising evening with a 4-2 victory over the Erie Otters in Ontario Hockey League action Thursday night. Its been a cast of rotating heroes that have been the most impressive with the Los Angeles Kings.MONTREAL -- The Montreal Impact had an impressive first season in Major League Soccer but no one from the players to team president Joey Saputo was gloating Wednesday. The club that started the season 1-5-2 ended up a respectable 12-16-6 for 42 points, but they faded late in the campaign to finish seventh and missed a chance to become a rare expansion team to make the playoffs. "Im happy because we attained our goal of being competitive in our first year, but Im not entirely satisfied because we are not a seventh-place team," Saputo said. "Our objective for 2013 will be to make the playoffs." There was much to feel good about as Saputo, vice-president Richard Legendre and sporting director Nick De Santis met with the media to analyse a team that looked at times like championship contenders and at others like stumbling newbies. Saputo said the core of the team will be back, including designated player Marco Di Vaio, former Italy defence stalwart Alessandro Nesta, team player of the year Patrice Bernier, defender Matteo Ferrari, captain Davy Arnaud, first overall draft pick Andrew Wenger, impressive young midfielder Felipe Martins, oft-injured centre back Nelson Rivas and goalkeeper Troy Perkins. Decisions have yet to be made on other players, but its likely French defender Hassoun Camara will also be back. Third-string goalie Greg Sutton has announced his retirement, and 39-year-old striker Eddie Sebrango may follow. The team hopes to upgrade the depth and skill level at both the outside and the centre of midfield and at forward, possibly with the addition of a second designated player, Saputo said. And head coach Jesse Marsch will return. "Its our first year in MLS and its Jesses first year as a head coach, and I think hes handled himself very well," said De Santis. The club was also pleased to average about 23,000 fans per game, third best in the league behind Seattle and Los Angeles. The average was boosted by two crowds in the 60,000 range early in the season at Olympic Stadium, before they moved back into an expanded 20,000-seat Saputo Stadium in June. The Impact hope to add points with strong play from the outset next season. Montreal spent the first half of the 2012 campaign just getting its starting lineup settled. And they want to eliminate the lapses that saw them give up a league-worst 17 goals in the final 15 minutes of games and their tendency to fall asleep on opponents free kicks and corners. "Its a results-oriented business and for me, especially considering the way the season ended, it wasnt good enough," said Marsch. "Theres been a lot of positives from within, but moving forward the expectations and demands have to be much higher, and it starts with me." The Impact started the season as a largely American side and ended with a heavy Italian accent. Ferrari was there from training camp, soon to be joined by striker Bernado Corradi, whose season was cut short by a major knee injury.dddddddddddd Then Di Vaio, the star of Serie As Bologna, signed in mid-season and brought in his national team pal Nesta. The Colombian Rivas and the Brazilian Felipe had also played in Italy. But Di Vaio took weeks to find his range, partly due to the distraction of having to clear himself at a match-fixing trial in Italy. Nesta was brilliant at times, sluggish at others. Both should be better after going through a full training camp with the club. Bernier returned after playing nine years in Europe to join his home town team in MLS and also had ups and downs. He endured the humiliation of being benched for seven games early in the season, then bounced back to lead the team in scoring and win player of the year honours. "The team evolved a lot in style," said Bernier, from Brossard, Que. "It became something we can call our own. "In the beginning we were competing but it was mostly hard work, not so creative. Once we came to Saputo Stadium we found more fluidity in our play. Possession, movement, creating a lot of chances. And the arrival of our star players, the Italians, brought a new step to the team." The high points were a first MLS point and Arnaud scoring the teams first goal before 58,912 at the Big O in a 1-1 draw with Chicago on March 17, a first win against Toronto FC on April 7 and a 1-1 tie with Los Angeles before a record 60,860 on May 12. After moving back to Saputo Stadium, there were rousing wins of 4-1 over Seattle and 4-2 over Houston. But then there was their first loss in their outdoor park, 3-0 to Toronto, that moved Saputo to tweet "Absolute disgrace, enough said." A five-game winning streak in August raised playoff hopes, but they were dashed with a loss in Columbus on a goal in stoppage time and a listless 3-1 defeat in Chicago. Montreal went 0-3-2 down the stretch. "Thats one of the things I think that dropped, the commitment and competitiveness," said Marsch. "Im proud of the progress the team showed until the end. "At the end, we didnt play our best. We have to retool knowing we have a good core and that next year the expectations are higher." The season is not quite over, as they leave Nov. 5 for friendly matches against Serie-A teams Bologna and Fiorentino before the off-season. The trip is part reward for a good first MLS season and partly a way to extend the clubs international presence. And who knows, maybe find another designated player? Saputo admitted it is another of the unbudgeted expenses that put the team slightly in the red. There was also an extra training camp trip and a mid-season slash in ticket prices. But he hopes to have the team at least break even next season. It will be the 20th anniversary of the Impact, who played 19 seasons in various lower leagues before joining MLS.

After one of the more improbable comebacks in postseason history
(Sports Network) - After one of the more improbable comebacks in postseason history, the St. Anthony Allen women's . Louis Cardinals will kick off the National League Championship Series tonight against the San Francisco Giants in a matchup of the last two World Series winners. The Cardinals overcame an early six-run deficit and were behind by two entering the ninth on Friday, but scored four times in their final at bat to shock the Washington Nationals, 9-7, in the decisive fifth game of the NLDS. "They just dont quit. I think that just says a lot about their character," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of his club. "They realized that no matter what is being said out there, no matter how many people count them out, they control their destiny." Of course, coming back is nothing new to this Cardinals team, which last season trailed in the wild card standings by 9 1/2 games only to roar back and clinch a playoff spot on the final day of the regular season, parlaying that into their 11th World Series title. "Thats an awesome feeling to share that moment with these guys after coming back from a 6-0 deficit like that," said Daniel Descalso, who homered and scored three times. "It was just awesome." Carlos Beltran had three hits and was on base five times in the crucial win for the Cardinals, who have now won six consecutive postseason elimination games and will be playing in their seventh NLCS since 2000. Beltran, who owns an all-time best .817 career postseason slugging percentage, hit .409 against the Nationals with two home runs and four RBI. He also joined Babe Ruth as the only players to reach base five times in an elimination game. "Tonight, I was thinking about the way the Cardinals came back last year," Beltran said, "and here I am, and were doing it again. This is a great feeling, being on this team. This is why I came here -- to win." It was a year of adjustments for the Cardinals, who went into this season with a new manager in Matheny following the retirement of Tony La Russa, and without three-time NL MVP Albert Pujols, who bolted to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as a free agent. St. Louis did not skip a beat, though, winning just two games less than last season, and finished 88-74. Although, it wasnt quite the furious finish they needed a year ago, the Cardinals still won 12 of their final 16 games, then topped Atlanta in the first-ever one-game wild card contest. Beltran was brought into replace Pujols and actually put up about the same numbers, as he hit .269 with 32 home runs and 97 RBI. But, catcher Yadier Molina really shined and should finish among the leaders in MVP voting. Already an all-world defender, Molina excelled at the plate, batting .315 with 22 home runs and 76 RBI. However, he only had two hits in the series with the Nationals. "We lose Albert, Lance is out the whole year, but we still know how to win," Molina said. "That tells you how good we are. Weve got some great players here, guys who wont quit." St. Louis is loaded with experience in their rotation, but it will be 25-year- old righty Lance Lynn getting the call in Game 1. Lynn was 18-7 this past season with a 3.78 ERA, but saw his ERA jump a full run in the second half of the season. Hes also lost both of his starts to the Giants, surrendering nine runs in 11 1/3 innings of those outings. Lynn made three relief appearances against the Nationals was 1-1 with an 8.10 ERA. Like the Cardinals, San Francisco needed all five games of its Division Series matchup to get past the Cincinnati Reds, as Buster Poseys grand slam punctuated a six-run fifth inning that helped the Giants cap an amazing comeback with a 6-4 win. "I didnt do much the whole series," said Posey. "I probably was a little overanxious at times. I was happy to be in that situation." San Francisco had dropped the first two games of the set with the Reds, but reeled off three straight wins to earn their second trip to the NLCS in three years. Brandon Crawford picked up two hits, an RBI and a run scored in the decisive win for the Giants, who became the first NL team to rally back from an 0-2 deficit to win a best-of-five series since the format was changed back in 1995. They also became the only team in either league to do so with three consecutive road victories. What made the Giants first round win even more amazing was the fact that Cincinnati outscored them 22-18, outhit them .261-.194 and recorded a 3.13 ERA, compared with San Franciscos 4.11. San Franciscos bullpen was terrific, as no starter was able to pitch beyond the sixth inning. "(Jeremy) Affeldt, (Sergio) Romo, (George) Kontos, all of them did a great job the whole series," manager Bruce Bochy said. Getting the ball in Game 1 for the Giants will be 23-year-old right-hander Madison Bumgarner, who was 16-11 this season, but 10 of those wins came at home. However, he was rocked by Cincinnati in San Francisco in Game 1 of the NLDS to tune of four runs in only 4 1/3 innings. Bumgarner also gave up seven runs over 13 1/3 innings in his two matchups with the Redbirds. The Giants offense is paced by NL MVP candidate Posey, who hit only .211 in the NLDS, but was the NLs leading hitter at .336 with 24 home runs and 103 RBI during the regular season. San Francisco has played the Cardinals twice before in the playoffs. St. Louis edged the Giants in a thrilling seven-game series in 1987, but San Francisco got its revenge in 2002 with a five-game win in the LCS. This is the first matchup between the two previous World Series winners since the New York Yankees and Milwaukee Braves dueled in the 1958 Fall Classic. Bernard Pierce women's . The 2008 World Series MVP was suspended for intentionally throwing at the Washington rookie in the Philadelphia Phillies 9-3 win over the Nationals on Sunday night. Bobby Rainey Jersey . Hes never faced the Dallas Cowboys either. Just days after one of his best outings as a professional, Griffin and the Redskins will try to keep the momentum going and their faint playoff hopes alive Thanksgiving Day at Cowboys Stadium. AJ Allmendinger was silent Sunday, a day after NASCAR suspended him for failing a random drug test. Penske Racing, which gave Allmendinger the biggest break of his career this season, is withholding judgment until NASCARs system has been completed. Where that leaves the 30-year-old driver remains to be seen. "You know its a disappointment at this particular time, but were going to wait and see what the second test results are before we make any comment or decisions. I dont think its fair to him," team owner Roger Penske said Sunday before the IndyCar race in Toronto. "I think if you look at sports, things like this happen. Its unfortunate, but I dont want to really make a statement pro or con right now. Im counting on the test being proper for him within 72 hours, and at that point theyll make a decision." There is no second test coming for Allmendinger, who was randomly summoned June 29 in Kentucky to provide a urine sample to NASCAR. Per NASCAR guidelines, the specimen was split in two for an "A" and a "B" samples. NASCAR announced 90 minutes before Saturday nights race at Daytona that Allmendingers "A" sample had failed the test. NASCAR didnt reveal what Allmendinger tested positive for, and Allmendinger hasnt commented publicly since the announcement. He has 72 hours from Saturday to ask for his "B" sample to be tested, and Allmendinger would be subjected to an indefinite NASCAR suspension if that sample also comes back positive. The suspension caught the Penske organization flat-footed, and the team had to scramble to get Sam Hornish Jr. off a television set in Charlotte, N.C., and back to Daytona in time to start the race in the No. 22 Dodge. A tire problem just past the halfway point caused Hornish to spin, and he finished 33rd in Allmendingers car. Penske had been vacationing in Europe and was on his way to Toronto when the suspension was announced, and there has been criticism from fans that NASCAR didnt give enough time to alert Allmendinger or the team that his test had come back positive. According to Allmendingers Twitter feed, he was making appearances on behalf of sponsor Shell/Pennzoil less than two hours before the suspension was announced at 6 p.m. But NASCAR clarified the timelines Sunday, and said its medical review officer first alerted Allmendinger of his positive test approximately six hours earlier. NASCAR was informed by the MRO about 2:30 p.m., and met with Allmendinger and a senior Penske official shortly after. The suspension was announced 30 minutes after the driver meeting. The team owner indicated Sunday that Hornish is available to drive Allmendingers car, but that the organizaation had yet to think beyond Daytona.dddddddddddd "We havent made any (decisions). He was obviously our first choice for yesterday," Penske said. "I was out of the country and came in last night and obviously got word on the way over what had happened. The big thing was to get Sam in the car so we could get in the race, which obviously was tight. "Evidently, (Allmendinger) was tested in Kentucky, and the results of that test came back on Friday. Unfortunately, we didnt know anything about it until 4 oclock Saturday, which was the last minute. Its too difficult to make a decision on where we go next." Just two weeks ago, Penske officials were adamant that Allmendinger was in line for a contract extension to stay with the organization. Allmendinger was hired in late December to replace Kurt Busch, who split with the team after a tumultuous season on and off the track. The hiring was a huge break for Allmendinger, who dominated his final season of Champ Car but has floundered since moving to NASCAR in 2007. Red Bull Racing failed to properly develop him in his move to stock cars, and Allmendinger was released in late 2008. He landed with Richard Petty Motorsports, where he showed steady improvement and moved up in the standings in each of his three seasons with the team. Penske snapped him up when Buschs seat suddenly opened, and Allmendinger a month later celebrated his newfound luck with a big win in the prestigious Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona sports car race. His 17 races with Penske hasnt been what he wanted, but the team has taken responsibility for much of the bad luck and mechanical issues that have plagued Allmendinger. And as drivers begin jockeying for 2013 seats, Penske officials remained confident that Allmendinger would be back in the car next season. Sponsor Shell has been pleased with Allmendingers representation, and Penske officials likened his struggles to those of Brad Keselowski, who had a rough 2010 first season with the team but exploded last year with three wins and a berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Now his future is clouded, and the timing couldnt be worse as teams traditionally negotiate their driver lineups during the summer. Allmendinger is the fourth driver to be suspended -- only the second at the Sprint Cup Series level -- since NASCARs implemented the drug policy in 2009. The previous three suspended drivers have not returned to competition. But, NASCAR has had crew members complete its rehabilitation program and return from a drug suspension since 2009. Penske was not critical Sunday about NASCARs program. "NASCARs got a good policy, I think its the right thing," he said.

the Tigers sixth straight win overall and record 12th in a row at Death Valley
CLEMSON, S. Jayron Hosley Jersey .C. -- Tajh Boyd is focusing on what No. 10 Clemson can still accomplish. Hes also becoming a big Maryland fan, at least for a week. Boyd threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns as Clemson trounced Maryland 45-10 on Saturday, the Tigers sixth straight win overall and record 12th in a row at Death Valley. Clemson (9-1, 6-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) kept on track for a second straight double-digit victory season. Yet its unlikely the defending ACC champs can supplant No. 8 Florida State as Atlantic Division winners and get a chance to win a second consecutive title. Boyd watched with several teammates last Thursday night when the Seminoles, who defeated Clemson 49-37 back on Sept. 22, got a last-minute TD to squeak out a 28-22 win at Virginia Tech. The Tigers lone hope is for these same Terps (4-6, 2-4) to rise up at home next week and defeat Florida State. "As a fan, I was like, Oh, man, thats something," Boyd said of Florida States comeback. "But we cant worry about anything else other than what we have to do and thats win all the games we have left." And theres plenty out there if the Tigers do that. Theyd achieve their first 11-win season -- Clemson plays North Carolina State and rival South Carolina at home the next two weeks -- since going 12-0 in their national championship season of 1981. Theyd also extend the programs longest home win streak. "Theyve been playing football here for 116 years and I think its kind of special that this group did it," offensive co-ordinator Chad Morris said. Perhaps most of all, a successful finish might bring the Tigers a second straight bid to the BCS, something theyd desperately love given last years 70-33 Orange Bowl debacle against West Virginia. All that, Boyd said, is for another day. "Theres a standard were trying to play to each time we go out there," he said. Clemson set the standard early against the banged-up Terps, who again started linebacker Shawn Petty at quarterback because of season-ending injuries to their four scholarship passers. The Tigers ended things early as Boyd threw for a 13-yard touchdown to Adam Humphries and a 28-yard score to DeAndre Hopkins. In between, defensive end Corey Crawford returned a fumble by Petty 16 yards for a touchdown as part of his teams 21-point first quarter. Clemson star receiver Sammy Watkins left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury. He said he couldve returned if the outcome had been in doubt, but the coaches decided not to take chances. Watkins is expected to play against the Wolfpack next week. This one was a mismatch from the start, mostly because Maryland was still counting up its injured players. Besides the four scholarship quarterbacks lost for the season, Maryland was without leading tackler Demetrius Hartsfield because of a torn ACL and star freshman Stefon Diggs due to a bad ankle. "These kids are fighting and battling and thats what well continue to do," Maryland coach Randy Edsall said. It was little surprise things got out of hand early. The Tigers scored on their second possession, Humphries stretching out in the end zone to make his first career touchdown grab. Twelve seconds later, Petty was chased down by Crawford, who forced a fumble, scooped up the ball and scored. The span between TDs was the shortest in Clemson history, bettering the 14 seconds it took former star Derrick Hamilton to score twice against Duke in 2003. And Clemson wasnt done. Petty fumbled again after he was sacked by Malliciah Goodman and the Tigers cashed in moments later on Boyds 28-yard scoring pass to Hopkins. A Tigers mistake -- Humphries muffed a punt catch inside his own 20 -- led to Marylands lone score as Petty connected with Devonte Campbell. The Terrapins looked like they had something else going when they forced Boyd to fumble while driving for touchdown on their own 1 and tailback Brandon Ross followed with a 44-yard run to midfield. But Petty was sacked for a loss of 15, Maryland punted and Clemson began a 66-yard drive that ended on Andre Ellingtons 6-yard touchdown run for a 35-7 lead. It was the third straight game the Tigers put up 35 points or more in the first half, a program first. Clemson outgained Maryland 310 yards to 90 in the opening half. Petty hung tough, but struggled against Clemsons defence. He finished 6 of 11 for 41 yards and a touchdown. He also fumbled twice. Edsall acknowledged Petty is in a difficult spot, adding the coaches have stressed to him the need to take care of the ball. The Terps were also 1 of 13 on third down tries. "You just cant do that against a top-ten team in the country," he said. Ross gained 100 yards on 16 carries for Maryland, whose 180 yards of offence were a season low. Jacquian Williams Jersey . Johnson scored twice in the third period to lead the Syracuse Crunch to a 4-1 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs in American Hockey League play at the Bell Centre on Friday night. Mike Angelidis and Philip-Michael Devos also scored while Dustin Tokarski made 13 saves for Syracuse (7-1-2). "Were doing everything we need to do," said Johnson, who scored goals 2:57 apart midway through the third. "Weve started to play a full 60 minutes, that was huge. We just werent doing that at the beginning of the season but we are finally putting some things together. Theres obviously a lot to work on but were looking good right now." Steve Quailer scored for Hamilton (4-4-2), which lost its second in a row, and Robert Mayer stopped 27 shots. Bulldogs forward Blake Geoffrion left the game and was sent to a hospital after a first-period hit by Crunch defenceman Jean-Philippe Cote. Geoffrion was caught with his head down by Cote as he drove along the boards. He was bleeding and holding his hands to his face when he skated off the ice to go to the dressing room. Hamilton coach Sylvain Lefebvre said he believed Geoffrion was injured when he fell to the ice. "Its a head injury," Lefebvre said. "Hes under surgery right now and its not life threatening." Geoffrion had successful surgery for treatment of a depressed skull fracture. His condition is stable and he remains at the intensive care unit at the hospital. He is out indefinitely, and the medical staff is expecting a complete recovery from his injury. Cote was not penalized for his devastating but clean hit on Geoffrion, though he did get a ffighting major for scrapping with Bulldogs forward Mike Blunden, who came after him right after the hit.dddddddddddd "To be honest, I didnt even really see the hit," Blunden said. "I was yelling, Heads up, Boomer! and then when I saw he got smoked I just went after the guy. "Were a team and we stick together and Boomers been a big part of our team. Its unfortunate what happened and hopefully he gets well soon." The Bulldogs, who are the Montreal Canadiens AHL affiliate, had the hockey-starved Bell Centre crowd of 18,582 chanting "Lets go, Bulldogs!" as Hamilton trailed 2-1 in the third period. "It was definitely really cool," Hamilton forward Brendan Gallagher said. "Obviously we would have liked to have given them a better game and a better result, but we really appreciated them coming out and supporting us, and when we do get the opportunity to come back hopefully we take advantage of it a little better." Devos gave Syracuse a 1-0 lead in the first when he deflected Dmitri Korobovs shot past Mayer for his first goal of the season. Quailer also scored his first of the season 2:07 into the second to tie the game at one. He carried the puck on the right side on a two-on-one with Gabriel Dumont and snapped a wrist shot past Tokarskis glove from the faceoff circle. Angelidis restored Syracuses one-goal late in the second when he beat Mayer between the legs from the goalmouth for his fourth goal of the season. Johnson increased the Crunchs lead to 3-1 at 7:58 of the third, finishing off a quick passing play with Richard Panik and Ondrej Palat. Panik picked up his second straight assist at 10:55 when Johnson got credit for his second goal after Paniks shot went in off his leg.

Ten-man Barcelona lost its first match in the Spanish league on Saturday
BARCELONA, Spain -- Ten-man Barcelona lost its first match in the Spanish league on Saturday, squandering a two-goal lead in a 3-2 defeat at Real Sociedad and conceding an injury-time winner. Tarell Brown Jersey . Lionel Messi scored for a 14th straight start to open for Barcelona in the seventh minute, and Pedro Rodriguez appeared to give the visitors full control with a goal in the 25th. But Gonzalo "Chori" Castro pulled one back in the 41st and equalized in the 63rd after Barcelonas Gerard Pique was dismissed for a second yellow card. Imanol Agirretxe went on in the 84th as Sociedad looked to press home its numerical advantage, and the striker charged forward to tap in Carlos Martinezs last-gasp cross for the winning goal a minute into stoppage time. Barcelona had set a league record by winning 18 games and drawing only once by the competitions midway point. "One day we were going to lose," Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova said. "Since it happened in the last minute Im not worried. I dont have any reproach for my players. We hit the post twice and had several other chances in the first half. But not even with the 2-0 lead did I think it would be easy." The Catalan club is still in command of the title race, 11 points ahead of Atletico Madrid before its game against Levante on Sunday. Defending champion Real Madrid is 18 points behind before Sundays visit to Valencia. Elsewhere, fifth-place Malaga was held to a 1-1 home draw by Celta Vigo. Sevilla drew 1-1 at Getafe in the league debut of coach Unai Emery, and Granada beat visiting Rayo Vallecano 2-0 to end its four-game winning streak. For the second time in four days, Barcelonas defence failed to protect a lead. On Wednesday, it let 10-man Malaga rally to score with the 90 minutes complete and snatch a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarterfinal. Saturdays game was similar to last seasons meeting in San Sebastian. In both games Barcelona scored twice to apparently have the game in hand before Sociedad roared back. Last year the same fixture ended 2-2. "We could have finished off the game, but it is always tough to win here," Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez said. Sociedad, which has lost only one of its last 10 games - a 4-3 shootout at Madrid this month - pressed up the pitch from the start. But Barcelona looked set to extend its 12-game league winning run with Messi and Pedro each scoring and hitting the goal frame. Messi struck with his first career goal at Anoeta Stadium and his league-leading 29th goal of the season through 20 matches. Moments after a rare miss by Messi one-on-one with the goalkeeper, Andres Iniesta poached Claudio Bravos short goal kick, crossed the ball for Cesc Fabregas, who deftly let it roll through to Messi, and he quickly put the ball on his left foot before unleashing a precise strike just inside the upright. It was then Pedros turn to get it right the second time. The forward was denied by the post in the 14th, but he made it 2-0 minutes later when he volleyed home Dani Alves cross. Sociedad came to life in the 41st when Castro was left unmarked on the left side to receive Carlos Velas pass and rifle the ball past goalkeeper Victor Valdes. Sociedad continued to apply pressure after halftime and soon found itself playing with an extra man when Pique was shown his second yellow card for cutting down Vela in the 56th. "Going down to 10 men changed the game," Vilanova said. "I told Gerard that he would be sent off with the next foul." The Basque side pushed short-handed Barcelona into its area and the effort paid off when Castros strike took a deflection off substitute Javier Mascherano to catch Valdes out of position. Barcelona didnt seriously threaten again, and the slow-footed Mascherano let Agirretxe slip behind him to reach Martinezs cross and end Barcelonas 15-game unbeaten streak in all competitions. Ninth-place Sociedad stayed undefeated in six consecutive home games. "There is no recipe for beating Barcelona," Sociedad coach Philippe Montanier said. "We won because we have a compact team that works hard, and we had a little bit of luck." The defeat was Barcelonas first in league play since it lost to Madrid on April 21 of last season. On Sunday, Osasuna hosts Deportivo La Coruna, and Valladolid plays Real Zaragoza. Athletic Bilbao visits Real Betis on Monday. Espanyol beat Mallorca 3-2 on Friday. Pernell McPhee women's Jersey . "Thoroughly enjoyed the oppurtunity to play for the Patriot organization... fans were ... wicked awesome, I wish all of you the best," he tweeted at about the same time the team was announcing he had been released. "Im healthy n living life, Ill be fine," he wrote on Twitter, where he had changed his job description to "UNEMPLOYED BLACK GUY" and posed a photo of himself sitting on a suitcase at the airport, hitchhiking. Ochocinco, 34, played in 15 games in his only season with the Patriots, starting three and catching 15 passes for 276 yards. He caught one pass in the Super Bowl as New England lost 21-17 to the New York Giants. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said he is "in the process of gauging interest from potential teams." During the playoffs, Patriots coach Bill Belichick described Ochocinco as a hard worker who "made a very good effort to do everything weve asked him to do on and off the field." Ochocinco said the shift from star receiver to barely contributing role player was a struggle. But it paid off with his first trip to the Super Bowl -- as a player, not as a gadfly asking questions on media day to those actually participating in the game. "Im happy, but the competitive side of me is (angry). Does that make sense?" he said before the team left for Indianapolis. "I handled myself with the utmost professionalism. I busted my (butt), didnt pout. Thats what I do: Give me the rocck! But I didnt do what people thought I would do.dddddddddddd Even I thought I was going to do it." Drafted in the second round by Cincinnati from Oregon State, Ochocinco spent 10 seasons with the Bengals and reached the Pro Bowl five straight years from 2003-07 and again in 09. He was the first player in NFL history to lead the conference in receiving four consecutive years. But Ochocinco -- who changed his name from Chad Johnson as a nod to his uniform number, 85 -- was perhaps better known for his antics that sometimes annoyed his teammates, coaches -- and even commissioner Roger Goodell, whom he called "Dad." He predicted victories, sent gifts to opposing locker rooms and invited fans to help him think up new end zone antics. His touchdown celebrations -- using a pylon as a golf club, performing CPR on the football, doing a jig, donning a Hall of Fame jacket -- led to repeated fines and an NFL crackdown. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis grew so frustrated that he once called him "Ocho Psycho." Ochocinco also appeared as a contestant on "Dancing With the Stars" and hosted a cable dating show. Under the guise of the online Ochocinco News Network, he attended the Super Bowl as a reporter for two years, asking questions of the teams during media sessions and even grilling Goodell last year on the prospects of avoiding a lockout. Last month, he posted online an open letter to Goodell to support the commissioner in the wake of Junior Seaus suicide, writing "no one is showing any support, I figured I would be the first." In his career, Ochocinco has caught 766 passes for 11,059 yards and 67 touchdowns.

Competition for the two spots on the Canadian womens mountain bike team for London was so tight that an Olympic silver medallist didnt make the squad. World champion Catharine Pendrel of Harvey Station, N.B., is the headliner on the team unveiled Wednesday. Rising star Emily Batty of Brooklin, Ont., was named to the team ahead of Marie-Helene Premont, who won silver at the 2004 Summer Games. "The only thing we kept wishing was that we had three spots because theyre both incredible riders," national mountain bike coach Dan Proulx said from Mont-Sainte-Anne, Que., during a conference call. "Ultimately it comes down to the best potential for a medal performance. "At the end of the day it was decided that Emily was the best choice for this Olympics." Geoff Kabush of Courtney, B.C., competing in his third Olympic Games, and Victorias Max Plaxton are on the mens team bound for London. Each country is allowed a maximum of two female racers and two male racers. The 24-year-old Batty was eighth in last years world championship and is currently ranked 15th in the world. She earned her first World Cup podium earlier this year by finishing second in a South Africa race. Premont, 34, finished just behind Batty in ninth at the world championship and is currently ranked 20th. "To gain this spot over Marie-Helene, its very honouring, but at the same time its very difficult," Batty said. "While I did take the second spot over Marie, Marie is somebody that paved my path. Any given day, shes still podium potential." Pendrel is the world No. 1 in womens mountain biking. The 31-year-old finished fourth in her first Olympics in Beijing four years ago and will be a podium contender in London. "Whenever you have expectations on you, I think it can be a huge positive because it means theres that many people who believe in you and your ability," Pendrel said. "I think you need to harness those expectations and turn it into confidence. Thats what I plan to do going into London." Pendrel and Batty will give Canada a strong 1-2 punch on the Hadleigh Farm course Aug. 11. "Canada is ranked No. 1 in the world in womens mountain biking," Pendrel points out. "Its so unfortunate we onlyy get to take two women to the Olympics because we have three women who can go there and perform.dddddddddddd "I think both Emily and myself have shown this year we can be on the World Cup international podium. Theres a lot of very talented women out there. I feel theres six or more women capable of the win on the day. We all have to bring our A game." The Canadian cycling teams objective is to win at least two medals and thats from all disciplines including track, road and BMX. Its quite likely a medal will come from the mountain bike team, however. "If we come out than less than two medals, well have missed the benchmark," said Jacques Landry, Cycling Canadas high-performance director. The women race on the penultimate day of the Games, while the men dont compete until the day of the closing ceremonies Aug. 12. The mountain bike team competes at a World Cup in France just prior to the Games. The riders will then stay at a house near Hadleigh Farm to prepare for their Olympic races. "Its too bad were not going to get to enjoy the experience in the village much," Kabush said. "Well be a bit removed which I think is going to be best for our focus for the competition. "The men are racing just before the closing ceremonies, but Im excited to get cleaned up and go to the closing ceremonies. Definitely some of my best memories from the Games are hanging out with all the athletes in the infield." Kabush finished ninth at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia, and was 20th in Beijing. Hes 28th in the mens rankings. Plaxton, who will make his Olympic debut, is currently 40th. "Ive crossed the first phase off the list of making the team and now Im going focus on having the best race I can," Plaxton said. Canada has won two Olympic medals in mountain biking. Alison Sydor took silver in 1996 followed by Premonts silver in 2004. The Olympic track cycling team was announced last week. It includes Edmontons Tara Whitten, Zach Bell of Watson Lake, Yukon, Calgarys Monique Sullivan, Joseph Veloce of Fonthill, Ont., Jasmin Glaesser of Coquitlam, B.C., and Gillian Carleton of Victoria. Laura Brown of Vancouver is an alternate. The road cycling team will be announced Thursday.
